Just downloaded latest messages in this group and I'm sort of
surprised to find no mention of the breakdown I experienced yesterday.

Around 20:30, after an hour or so frantically investigating many
aspects of my setup, router configuration, etc, I did what I should
have done at the outset: called 151. That gave me a recording of a
major broadband breakdown. Not sure how many hours it lasted (over 4)
but happily it was OK this morning at 07:00.

Anyone know how widespread this was, and its cause please?

Copied from the Plusnet status page at 2253 last night.

"This is an update to the previously announced problem whereby some
broadband customers are experiencing difficulty connecting and seeing errors
such as "invalid username or password", "error 691" or "error 718". A copy
of the last announcement can be found here:-

http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1162328415.htm

We have been in contact with BT Wholesale who have informed us that the
problem has been caused by a Major Service Outage (MSO) on their network.
The problem doesn't appear to be localised to a particular part of the
country. Some customers have reported to us that the problem appears to be
intermittent and have been able to connect after retrying.

This issue is not affecting customers on our LLU platform.

We are currently waiting for a further update from BT regarding this problem
and will post an update as soon as we have more information."

Here in Somerset it was mostly OFF, took around thirty tries to get
on, and then thrown off after a few minutes. Today, I connected first
time, am afraid to disconnect though, and the emails I sent haven't
arrived at destination. I'm worried they're permanently lost. Anyone
else had disappearing mail?

I assume from that, that you're using some USB modem or similar... I'd
strongly suggest getting yourself a router ... won't cost the earth (I've
seen some from about 15 quid, and brand new, you should find that even with
delivery you'd get change from 27.50. http://linuxadsl.co.uk/ has "5 port"
(that's 4x ethernet + 1x USB) Safecom router for 21.99 (out of stock today
but worth checking) and there's a low cost Zyxel router available - see

I suggest you post a query about that on either the forum at plus.net or
via the User Group forum - see http://usergroup.plus.net/ It may well
be explained by a member of staff or some other customer...

Thanks all, appreciate those helpful replies.

It may be a naive question, but isn't there supposed to be some sort
of backup system that automatically takes over if the main system
fails? I gather it was off for 6-10 hours...

And of course, it's Catch 22: with no internet connection and the
support phone lines jammed, it's hard to find out what's happened.

Looks like it still isn't sorted. This is an extract from the current BT
announce group:

Broadband Connection Problems
We are currently investigating a problem with broadband access and you may
be experiencing problems connecting to the service. We request that any
users experiencing these problems please power cycle your router and again
attempt to re-connect. Please bear with us as we endeavour to resolve this
problem as quickly as possible. Meanwhile we apologise for any
inconvenience.
