One of the points displayed after I ordered Broadband online a couple
of days ago (due 15th march) was this:

"Step 5. Cancellation of existing Internet products:
Some of your BT services may become redundant or are incompatible as a
result of your BT Broadband purchase (i.e. SurfTime); you may need to
cancel these services. Please make a free call to 0800 30 90."

That number looked invalid, and sure enough didn't dial anywhere. On
then calling BT Billing (an appalling 15 minute Muzak wait) I was told
they could only cancel my Surftime from midnight tonight, i.e the day
of the request. A further 12 min wait got me to Customer Services.
They said that, as a special concession, quite outside normal service,
they would try to cancel from the future date I requested.

Is there in fact a special free phone service that *could* have done
what the web page sensibly suggests? (I tried the obvious 0800 300 900
and that gave Unobtainable.)

Not a good start with BT...

Welcome to the Alice-in-Wonderland world of BTYahoo. A nightmare
following the so called "upgrade" from Btopenworld to BTYahoo.
