Line testing procedure

effect on your 56k modem connection?
I applied for broadband on Monday of this week. Starting last night, Friday,
by normally fairly decent service from Btopenworld has gone down hill
rapidly. Difficulty in logging on, poor connection speeds and frequent
disconnections.

while the tests themselves don't generally cause any problems (They do
tests similar to 10baseT link/wire length if you're familiar), so all
its doing is testing for length of cables, and a basic signal test to
check it can hold a decent carrier. Once the test completes that should
be it, and even whilst its running i'd not expect to loose quality on
the line.
More likely is your dial-up provider going through a rough patch.. Or,
has the line been converted to ADSL?? Have you ordered ADSL and they're
going through the motions to get it activated? In which case it may have
been activated and just awaiting the final green light before they let
you know.

I seem to remember that somewhere during the sign up process with plusnet,
mention was made of the possibility of a poor connection with my current
dial-up isp, (btinternet). Problem is, I can't stay on line long enough to
find this reference. I have checked the btinternet newsgroups but no one
there seems to be having any connection problems at the minute.
This may sound stupid but the noise I currently hear when the modem is
connecting to my isp, (handshake?), is slightly different to the noise I
used to hear prior to Friday.

The ADSL test won't make any difference to your dial up connection.
If BT have actually installed ADSL on your line - then that sometimes does
impact dial up speeds.
If you have a ADSL modem/router - try and connect it and see if it sync's
with the exchange.
From your other post you say that you are supposed to be activated on the
8th October - its quite common for BT to do these several says early.

At long last im due to be converted to adsl (from homehighway) on wed 8th, i
am going through bt broadband for this...
Can you tell me is there anypoint in connecting my router/modem just now and
see if it connects etc...
Or will i be best in waiting, due to me still more or less having the
homehighway box still connected etc...
meaning im still on a digital line just now and not ptsn ?

yes I would connect your equipment. I was supposed to get my adsl from Pipex
on the Monday I connected my equipment two days before, the Friday night
actually. There it was, live. Set up my router and was away.
