Am trying to help a mate with his non working Onetel email account. The
username/mailserver settings supplied don't work and the Onetel website
support only describes the settings for a dial up email account.
Interestingly no matter what you type in the 'outgoing mailserver' box it
gets changed to 'localhost' as it does on his other (dial up) email
accounts(they work). The usename gets changed automatically as well. I'd
appreciate the correct settings if anyone has them.

I use a OneTel mail account as well as my NTL mail account and access the
OneTel mail server with no problems using my broadband connection. Both the
incoming (POP3 port 110) and outgoing (SMTP port 25) servers are called
mail.onetel.net.uk (212.67.96.149, don't know the alternate server address).
These were the settings I used when I used to connect via a modem, the only
thing I changed was on the connection tab in account properties and that was
to uncheck the box 'Always connect to this account using:" everything has
worked fine since.

Nic,

Does your friend have anti virus software installed?

I have seen instances of Norton changing the mail account settings if the
email protection is turned on - this would explain why the account settings
get changed.

HTH,

John

Yes you're right about the anti virus software, I'd forgotten that it
sometimes does that!

Yes ok for dialup, POP3 and SMTP mail.onetel.net.uk. Can only use SMTP if
useing OneTel dialup.

For adsl you now have to use pop.oneteldsl.net for POP3. When OneTel first
started adsl their POP3 server was pop.iomartdsl.com. Not sure about SMTP
( can't remember not using anymore ) but I think its still
pop.oneteldsl.net.

Hope this helps your friend out, if not phone them up on 0800 957 0700, or
for slow tech support at national rate 0870 055 9100.

Yes I should have mentioned that to send mail you need to use your own
OneTel dial-up account...

I and several other people I know can still recieve mail from the normal
POP3 server ie POP3.onetel.net.uk using adsl and not our usual dial-up
accounts. I believe you can retrieve mail from just about any POP3 mailbox
if you have permission, regardless of how you are connected, sending is a
different matter of course.

Thanks Chris,

What I was saying to the original post is that, if you are using OneTel
adsl. To use your e-mail account you are given one e-mail address in the
format firstname....@oneteldsl.net. The servers are pop.oneteldsl.net
for incoming, and I think the same for outgoing. If not just change pop for
smtp for outgoing i.e. smtp.oneteldsl.net.
You are right about retrieving mail from just about any pop3 account, as
long as you keep your account active i.e. dial up once a month to retrieve
e-mail. I still use several old e-mail accounts for receiving mail from
different providers, one is from Onetel.net.uk another is Oneteldsl.net.
These are all collected from my current and best used isp Andrews&Arnold.

Hope this clears matters up,

bryanlondon
