I know there has been some discussion around this topic before but what I am
after is a comprehensive list of router options that are available to those
of us using the Alcatel USB modem "frog" with their ADSL connection (I
imagine most home ADSL users have this setup).
I am keen to to share my connection without having to have my main PC (the
one the frog is connected to) on all the time. I know there is a router due
out soon from http://www.draytekcorp.co.uk (the Vigor2200usb) that allows
you to plug your "frog" into directly but as I understand it, this is mainly
just so you can use a router without breaching any contract you may have
with your ISP about using their equipment. I have read that some people are
using routers that effectively replace their alcatel modem e.g. the AR-601
http://www.seg.co.uk/adsl/ar601.html which sounds great :-)
so thats two options. are there any more? what other routers out there can
directly replace the frog and allow me to share the connection?
cheers for any info :-)

I am considering using a router but not because I have failed to share out
my frog connection. There are several ways to do this;
You can use Internet Connection Sharing which comes with products after Win
98 release 2
Or my preference is the use of Tiny's Winroute pro. This software is
excellent, it is an accredited firewall, DHCP server, mail server, DNS relay
server, Proxy server. You can download a demo and if you like it you can
either purchase it (that is what you should do) or you could look at a site
such as astalavista.box.sk and if you happen upon a key generator for
winroute, then you most definately should not use this :-)
Winroute will allow you to configure it such that it will always keep your
line open so if the connection drops or you do reboot you don't have to
worry about scripting something to fire it off.
The reason in case you wondered why I am considering a router is because I
am looking to replace my 10Mbps Hub with something which will give me
10/100, also I am looking to integrate wireless networking into my house as
I often work in the lounge / garden with my laptop and the current cable
trailing around the house is getting on the missus nerves to say the least
:-)
The way I figure, rather than going out and buying a 10/100 hub/switch and a
wireless access point then I may as well go the whole hog and get a device
which will do everything inc the DSL router bit
Only my opinions

from what ive picked up over the last couple of days there seems to be
no problems with unplugging your frog and plugging a proper ADSL
access router into the rj-11 socket on the wall.
this is in breach of contract but as others have pointed out no-one
has been disconnected for this offence (YET).
IMO BT deliberately chose the frog so they could cream people an extra
60 quid /month to upgrade to the S500(Ethernet) option which uses a
proper Access Router.
knowing BT this does not surprise me.
In Holland KPN gave me a 512 k service with an Alcatel Speedtouch
Ethernet Router for 100 fl /month (30 pounds). Again not surprising
knowing the Dutch.
Some options you have are the Efficient Networks 5816, The Alcatel
Speedtouch home or pro model and i have also heard tell of the 3Com
OfficeConnect 4-port model.
LOL :-) yeah I am using a software solution at the moment but I really want
to go hardware so I can say, just plug a laptop straight in without having
to go switch on my main PC etc also, I was interested in running an old PC
as a webserver 24/7.

I guess you could say that if you disconnect your adsl service and give up
your frog you would not have a use for *any* adsl router ;-)
