Security
The router provides many security features found in firewalls such as IP
filtering, socket filtering, NAT which makes your internal network invisible
to the outside, and Virtual Private Networking (VPN).
---------------------
Do all routers have all this?. I was considering the netgear one but it
doesnt seem to be as secure as this dlink one?
Nearly all the routers will do the above, in fact the Netgear goes down to
URL Content filtering which may be more secure than IP level controls.
However I still think no matter which router you choose you should still run
some firewall software such as Sygate, Norton or BlackIce on your local PC,
especially if its running Windows.
A basic principle of security is "defence in depth" and the simple controls
most router have are just not enough.
For example suppose some malicous software inflitrates your PC and attempts
to connect out on port 80, the the router may well let it through, as it
can't tell the difference between that and your Web browser connecting to a
legitmate web site. A good PC firewalls will detect that a program other
than a legitmate WEB browser is trying to connect on port 80 and warn you
and block it.
On the other hand if a web site is set up to use a port other than 80, (for
example http://any.ol.site.com:8080/ will connect on port 8080) then the
router may block a legitimate connection, but a local firewall may allow it
through.
