We have finally managed to get BT's 2 way satellite service installed after
2 months of waiting. We put the order in on the 18th April and had it
installed last Saturday.

We are meant to get 500/150 bandwidth, but so far a received nothing like
that performance. Today I downloaded 5099K in 1h2m16s. I would have
expected this to take about 90 seconds. This is performing about the same
as a 14K modem.

Has anyone else had experience of BT's satellite service?

I thought BT only offered a one way sat link? Or have you paid silly money
for a corporate sat connection?

I had mine installed around 2 months ago, I get speed around 500/75 in
general. Is the software that comes with the system installed
correctly? Your proxy setting for HTTP should be

localhost 9877, for instance..

I've had a few glitches with things like email, but in general the
system has met expectations. This is what leads me to think your not
benefitting from the software acceleration.

in response to the previous response, BT are trialing a one way
system, BTOpenworld provide a twoway "Gilat" managed system as use by
tiscali.

I had this system installed and had the same thing, coupled with high ping
times (8000ms+) and frequent disconnects, after 3 weeks I cancelled my
contract and they came to collect it.

In my opinion its cr*p however others have had better luck......

Did you get a full refund ? I'm starting to think that satellite is going to
be my only option for a broadband connection at my current location apart
from 802.11 "wifi"-ing to a friend 2 clicks down the road when his exchange
is upgraded in 6 - 9 months time.

We are partially a linux shop and use linux servers and firewall. They do
claim with the 500/4 service that it will work with any operating system.

The VSAT box does have a webcache which we are using, but we are still not
seeing anywhere near the performance promised. It doesn't help with other
protocols like smtp or nntp. The service is sold as a 512/150K IP service
not web service and as such I expect all protocols to work at that speed.

We are getting pings in the region of 700 to 2500ms. I can live with the
700ms, but 2500 is silly. I seem to be disconnected from IRC a couple of
times a day. and IRC is not the most bandwidth intense protocol in the
world and that is without anyone downloading anything.

Same situation here, but no obliging friend.
