i'm currently with BTO. due to personal finances i have stopped all my credit
cards and debit cards. However BTO tell me that they can not take any other
type of payment. they dont take direct debit, cheques or cash (girobank)
payments. Basically to cut a long story short, they are going to cancel my
account and still bill me for the remaining 5 months of the 12 month contract,
just because they only accept payments with MC, visa or debit cards. I've never
had any cause for complaint with BTO (unlike some it seems) up till now i have
had no problems with the line or any thing else.

So my question is, do you know of any decent ISP providers who can provide a
alternative method of payment other that credit cards?
Bearing in mind its for home use and not business. in fact i even suggested
changing my account to a business one to BTO so i could pay by cheque, but they
said i would still have to close my account and re-apply. so i figured if i
have to re-apply it will be with someone else.

any help?

cheers

All I can think of is BT Broadband which is paid through a phone bill.

Plusnet do billing through direct debit as well.

Sorry if this repeats as I can not see or find the start of this thread for
some reason!

I have just ended my contract after two years with BT Broadband (gone over
to Demon) and was paying by direct debit. I was on Business 500. I am also
paying Demon bt direct debit.

BTConnect (officially a business service) send a quarterly invoice
that I pay by cheque. Fifteen quid a month for 24/7 access, two hour
cut off, and I never have any trouble at all in connecting.

Surely if they can bill you for the remaining five months if they cancel the
account, they can do it with you keeping it? Have you considered offering to
pay them those five months of rental up front?

My ISP, AAISP (www.aaisp.net) are happy to take payment in anything that
looks like money :) as per this page:

http://aa.nu/adslpackpayment.html

It's thirty quid a month for the usual domestic 512k service. It works quite
well for me.

Aha, *you're* the satisfied customer! I knew one had to be out there
somewhere ;)

I think BT Openworld are trialling a Direct Debit option - its supposed
to be for new customers but if you phone up and speak to a manager they
may let you join the trial as well - I think I read somewhere of another
existing customer who had managed this...

Eclipse bill Assursys by invoice. I'm not sure if they'll do the same for
personal accounts - ask 'em! ;-)

Alex.

I understand this is actually illegal. Contact your local trading standards
office.

Zen do monthly billing. I pay monthly and only had a three months contract,
but I have been with them for nearly a year.

I suspect the reason BT insist on a credit card is because a Continuing
Authority (the open-ended cridit card authorisation you sign) cannot be
revoked by you. Even if what you get for the money is pants there is
absolutely nothing you can do to stop them taking your money. All very
well and good for them of course.

Why is it actually illegal ?

The OP entered into a 12 month contract, and it's in the T&C.

True. IANAL but I understand the law which required anyone to accept
coin of the realm in payment was abolished some years ago. So BT *can*
require some specific form of payment.

You have to watch out with things like hire cars, if you sign anything
