My son uses BT Yahoo Broadband. When I moved from Dial-Up to broadband
I mistakenly signed up for BT Broadband, not BT Yahoo Broadband. (I
chose the 512 Kbps, 'unlimited' download option, not the entry level
£18/month one. So I was disappointed to find it didn't come with
either an email account or Usenet access, but that was down to me.)

Recently my son received the pleasant surprise of getting a doubling
in speed, to 2Mb, *and* a price reduction (the latter for 3 months).

So he now has times my speed for about the same price (I'm paying
£25/month.)

Before I get on the phone to gripe about this, has any other BT
Broadband user any more information that might be relevant please?

And how easy is it to switch from one to the other?

first of all bt does not provide with any broadband package with
'unlimited' download option.you will be getting 15GB per month.
Secondly adsl speed depends on your telephone line.
If you are paying 24.99 pm, you can get UPTO 2mb MAXIMUM speed. So if
your bt telephone line does not support higher speeds, you wont get it.
but u will get min 512.
check your speed at www.adslguide.org (click on 'speed test' on left menu)

BT Business Broadband has no download limit.

Thanks for that fast reply. Could you help me interpret the results I
got from that speed test please:
Direction Actual Speed True Speed (estimated)
Downstream 445 Kbps (55.6 KB/sec) 480 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 242 Kbps (30.3 KB/sec) 261 Kbps (inc. overheads)

That seems to imply I'm getting about 94% of my rated speed (480/512)
- is that regarded as satisfactory?

BTW, I have just discovered that apparently the speed increase does
apply to BT Broadband as well.

But, unlike BT Yahoo, I don't think it is automatic.

I note your point re 15GB; is that generally regarded as a fair deal?

Your download speed is only very slightly below top, but nothing to be
concerned about, your upload is fine. Speed tests may vary alot, tomorrow
you may get 60KB/sec.
The speed increase will be automatic for everyone. But not everyone will
get it now. The upgrade process is taking place over the next 5 months, so
BT will inform you with an approximate date of upgrade.
With regards to 15gb being a fair deal, well different people will give you
different views on whether that is fair or not. For people who download
alot of stuff then they may run out. The average user uses about 4-5gb per
month. If you do run over the limit they will not cut you off, they will
just reduce your speed for the rest of the month. Or you can buy extra gb's
at £1.95 each. Unless you are a heavy user then you are unlikely to go over
the limit.

Beware Greeks baring gifts.

BT Broadband, £24.99 15GB
BT Yahoo! Broadband, £26.99 15GB

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the 512k user will be upgraded
after then 1MB users from about 9th March onwards

May have got this worng though, as I've gotten so confused over all of this.

The BT Broadband Helpline should be able to give some idea of when it will
happen - maybe not an exact date (from reading various posts BT Broadband
support seem to be a bit more clued up that BT Yahoo! BB Support). They
should also be able to confirm the highest speed you can get

Many thanks for that very helpful (and reassuring) reply.

Thanks, Nicola. When I eventually got through by 'phone I got a rather
vague answer along lines of 'It's all being done...we're checking all
connections...' but no firm dates, so you could be right about 9th
March.

As per my separate post, Subject 'BT Broadband Help (Motive
Chorus...)', I'm unable to follow through with an email. I was advised
uninstall and reinstall that utility, but haven't got around to that
yet.

I am an average user, I rarely download, maybe watch a few game trailers
each week. Its mostly browsing and ng's. Have checked my router logs and
apparently I have used only about 3-4 gb in 3 weeks, so I am reassured
myself by that. Theres quite alot of room for manouvre if my internet
habits do change.
One thing I forgot to mention was you will only be upgraded if your line
supports it. If you are too far from the exchange for 1mb service then you
will stay as you are. Its more of a concern for me being on the borderline
but I shall have to wait and see.

I often bring down 8-10Gb/s - so what. If I or any other heavy user
was being unfair (which is marketing speak to get those actually using
a BB service to it's best potential) then those sharing the contended
service would see the speed fall dramativally. In fact, very, very few
see any speed decreases at any time of the day. If that happened we
could not d/l that much could we - eh!

As mentioned, I have never in 2 years seen the contention come into
the equation. This is about getting those heavy users to pay more, and
nothing else. Just like congestion charging - introduce phasing of
lights, one lane instead of 2, extra traffic lights all over the
place, then say we have to pay extra to use a service we already pay
for because it has been screwed on purpose.
