Anyone here using the 64K 'entry-level' cable modem access
that NTL are offering now?

I'm interested to know how it compares to a standard dial up modem
and whether people think it is worth the extra £5 over free modem
access.

Cheers
Ronnie

On 12 Apr 2001, I take it that "Ronnie Gibson"
<ronnie...@strath.ac.uk> said:

Others will have to let you know about the speed bit (I'm on the 512K
service), but without *any* hesitation *at all* I'd say it would
definitely be worth £5 a month just for the always-on aspect. It's
brilliant, that.

My mate was on the 64k trial and he liked it because of th eno loss of
connection, he said speeds were about the same as his 56k modem tho' (4.8k/s
downloading a zip file)

ronnie...@strath.ac.uk says...

Access speed it comparable to a 56k modem, but the fact that it is
'always on' makes a huge difference. Also, it's superb for online games
- just had a weekend playing 'Tribes 2' with pings of 20-40ms to
Barrysworld servers :-)

Forgive him. Americans aren't aware there is anything outside of North America ;-)

I'm hopefully destined to get NTL 64K installed in a few days, sorry if it's
a FAQ but can anyone give me a start on where to look for useful info? I'm
looking for helpful stuff like best way to deal with NTL tech if if it don't
work, where to get Linux drivers, etc.

Salesman said I'd be getting an Ethernet-interface 3Com cable modem but
bloke across the road from me says he already received his and it's actually
made by Motorola - this worries me because the Moto entry-level device has a
USB interface or at least it appeared to when I looked at
http://www.cable-modems.org/gallery/index.htm

The 'standard' NTL cable modem is the Motorola SB4100, this has both a
USB & a Ethernet port so you should have no worries about using it via
ethernet. The 3Com modems haven't been available for a time now
(there was apparently a incompatibility problem).

Hope this puts your mind at rest..
