I'm thinking of moving to Croydon (don't laugh) in a few months time (South
or East side - probably East) and was wondering if anyone has experience of
either ADSL or Cable Modems there.

I know Blue Yonder is available in some areas, and ADSL is almost definately
available but some words of experience wouldn't go unappreciated to be
honest.

Cable Modem will probably be my first choice given it's price and for a year
at least it should be ok. After a year I'll probably move over to ADSL when
the traffic picks up in the streets. I've high hopes (ever the optimist)
for xDSL since I've seen details of what BT Ignite plans to do with it.

Cheers,

Yao

And what does BTi plans to do with it - oh can you tell us if they are gonna
do 90% UK coverage - that seems more like national rollout than what they
are saying right now!!!

Well, I'm talking more than just coverage. I work in Telecoms and
particularly in an area where we've working closely with BT Ignite on
various pieces of work. I agree that it's been appalling the way they've
dealt xDSL but from the business side of things it's quite interesting what
they're trying to achieve.

Could you expand on that?

Without disclosing anything commercially sensitive of course.

I moved to East Croydon 3 weeks ago (just off the Addiscombe Road),
and ordered ADSL from BT Openworld just after moving in, and they
installed it yesterday.

The engineer was great, moving the master socket from the hallway, and
converted an extension on the top floor to a master socket (and kept
all 7 extensions working)

It's been on for the last 36 hours without any problems.

The drivers all installed Ok and and within 10 minutes of watching the
engineers laptop working, my PC was connecting at 576,000 bps.

I must admit that one of the considerations when I was moving, was
whether the area had ADSL yet.

I have a friend in South Croydon, and he also has had no problems with
BTO.

Go for it.

I've got Homechoice's ADSL service. It only uses about 20% of the full ADSL bandwidth because Homechoice uses the other 80% for its pay-to-view TV service, which is its core business. They used to say they were going to increase the internet bandwidth but they've gone quiet about that recently.  I've found it to be a huge improvement on dial up access. At £20 a month it seemed like good value compared with Blue Yonder's £33; but now BY has reduced their charge to £25, if you also take their £9 phone and digital TV service. So for £34 a month you can get broadband internet, basic digital TV channels and a phone line.
