NTL (if you can get it) is the cheapest deal I know of at £10 a month
on top of your NTL phone/cable TV subscription. The 64Kb/sec service
runs quicker than a modem, but more important, its always on and very
reliable in my experience.

The best deal I've found is Telewests Blueyonder 512kbps for £25/month if
you subscribe to any of their other services. NTL was about the same I
think....not sure....but I'm not even sure I can get that here.

He said he wanted ADSL and he was in a Eurobell area. Therefore there is no
point in quote details of NTL or Telewest!

As far as I know, there is no Eurobell service (yet). Looks like your only
option is the £20/month service from Homechoice

so what sort of downloads can i expect from that?
its considerably slower than the the likes of BTO, but thats obviously
reflected in the price. are 15-20k/sec downloads unrealistic?

I seems that you only get 115kbps and you still have to pay your
existing phone bill. I don't think it would work out significantly
cheaper than the BT ADSL.

It is 115kbps as you originally said for a "cheapy". This will offer you
~14K bytes per second. It is about the same as 2 channel ISDN, but costs £20
for an always on service.

Your other option, depending on where you live, might be Tele2. This is
150kbps for £20 per month, ie slightly faster. Have a look at
www.tele2.co.uk

It may be a quater of the speed but in practice you are unlikely to get 512k
all the time with the other services.

You have to pay your phone bill in addition to other ADSL costs too, ie £50
for the ADSL and another £10 for phone line + calls on top of that.

Ah. I was told before that the ADSL fees replaced your BT line rental.
