Happy New Year
For the last couple of days I haven't been able to get onto
news.individual.net and this site http://myreader.co.uk/msg/1122122007.aspx
suggests it's a plusnet issue.
I change to port 80 etc but that didn't make any difference, then lo and
behold it seems fine today!

Anyone else had a problem?

I wonder if it's anything to do with this J B. NIN keep sending this email,
in fact I got another one yesterday:

"a week before christmas, the IP address of News.Individual.NET /
NEWS.Individual.DE was changed, and the old address will stop working
after the holiday as we have to switch off the old machine.

You are receiving this email because our logs show that you're still logging
in at the old machine, which is probably caused by not using the DNS name
"news.individual.net" in your newsreader, but instead the IP address that
name used to point to, namely 130.133.1.4; this also means that YOU HAVE TO
CHANGE THE SERVER ADDRESS otherwise news.individual.net will stop working
for you as you'll be unable to connect once the old box is powered down.

While we recommend using the proper DNS name (so a manual change won't
be necessary in the future), here are the new IP addresses to use:

news.individual.de 130.133.4.10
news.individual.net 130.133.4.11

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions."

Strangely though I have always used the DNS name in my newsreader set up and
have never, ever used an IP address. So far I have had no problems, but
have told them this and asked for clarification.

I didn't get that e mail, but I used to have news.ndividual.net in the
server name and 119 in the server port.
I changed this to Port80.individual.net and put 80 in the server port box
It made no difference yesterday, but seems fine today!

Plusnet say they have 'no reported issues' despite two folks in that initial
thread saying that they'd reported it to plusnet!!

No problems here.

Maybe the name is hard-coded to the old ip in your hosts file?

Someone might have suggested doing this a few years ago because you had
a DNS lookup issue, and you've forgotten you did it?

To see where to look for this file for your operating system, look here:

Spot on Denis. It was only on one computer on my network, and I've
absolutely no memory of having added it in the past. Must be due tothe fact
that I'm over 21 by just over 3 times. :) Again many thanks for that.
Unfortunately it won't let me save any amendments. I get the error message;

*Cannot create the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file"
Make sure that the path and filename are correct"

I was trying to edit it by opening in notepad but it seems that I can only
then save it as a separate txt file. Presumably I must have done it in the
past, but don't recollect how to do so.
I've also followed the instructions on
http://www.ehow.com/how_5225562_edit-windows-hosts-file.html which don't
appear to be very disimilar to what I was doing and that gives me the same
error message as well.
I've tried it on twocomputers, both with Windows XP Home Edition Service
pack 3 and both give the same error message. Doh. Any suggestions as to
what I am doing wrong?

Falling foul of XP's attempts to prevent people screwing things up by
setting privileges on files. You probably only have read & execute
privs.

Either change the privileges explicitly, or save it as some other name,
then go in and delete the old one and rename the new one, or save it
elsewhere, and copy it across.

It's a protected file. You need administrator privs under nt / xp /

This is because changing that file is a technique that various malicious
software has used in the past. Anti virus / spyware etc software might
also be trying to protect the file.

Method 1. Try right clicking notepad and choosing the "run as
administrator" option if there is one, then opening the file from inside
the "admin" notepad.

Method 2. Login to a user with administrator privs. You might then need
to do 1 as well.

Method 3. Reboot into safe mode. Then 1, or 2 and 1.

As I have always been the adminstrator (well only user) on these two
computers it was worrying that the folder had suddenly become read only.
However it's apparently Spybot that is most likely the guilty party when it
adds the addresses of dubious sites to the hosts folder. It does this and
re-routes them to your own 127.0.0.1 address so that you wouldn't yorself
get routed to a bad site. from the suspicious one I never thought that
simply unticking the 'read only' box would work, so hadn't tried it. I
suppose that is safe enough as trojans etc wouldn't be able to untick them
anyway, as it has to be done manually. All sorted now.

By default, if you try to modify your hosts file in Vista, it will not
let you save it. It tells you that you don't have permission. To
successfully modify the hosts file, run notepad.exe as an administrator
and open the file.

1) Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4) Click File -> Open
5) Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
6) Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to
"All Files (*.*)"
7) Select "hosts" and click "Open"
8) Make the needed changes and close Notepad. Save when prompted.

How does this differ from logging on as administrator, then running notepad?

Microsoft has introduced UAC (User Account Control) with Windows Vista, see
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/user-account-control.aspx

"Even when you use an administrator account, User Account Control provides
heightened security. By default, most programs run with the permissions
of a standard user, which limits the potential damage they (or malware
acting through those programs) can do."

My parents and aunt have been on Linux for a year now, less hassle
overall, 95% of what they did was firefox/thunderbird anyway, dad even
gettig to grips with inkscape and gimp now.

The netbook that I use for my personal stuff is also Linux, I have a Xen
server that runs many VMs and a myththbox sat under the telly. The work
laptop has to dual boot, there are a still a handful of tasks that
require Windows (or at least using RDP to a Windows box).

I've mentioned it in threads various (mainly over on
p.s.customer-feedback) however I know what's causing this.

NIN changed the IP addresses of their servers and this is one of the
pieces of information our traffic management platform uses to identify
the server as 'text only' and therefore give it the right priority
across the network.

I've just wireshark captured some telnet traffic and it's getting lumped
into the 'bronze' instead of the 'gold' trafffic queues.

I've raised this internally and I'll post a planned maintnenace
announcement to our service status feed once we've a date for fixing it
(will be during the next fortnight).

Yes, but only twice. When I mailed bombed them with 75,000 unsubscribe

Howerver, I got some 'system' spam from Plusnet just after - and given
the content really something considering I've not been a customer since
2001, and had *no* business dealings with you since:

"
We're writing to let you know that the government is increasing VAT on

We're also taking this opportunity to make our terms and conditions

The person that compiled the dataset mistakedly included accounts that

Case of human error I'm afraid so sorry about that.
