They seem to be having a few DNS or other network problems over the past
month or so. Intermittently I found that all Android, Linux or iPad devices
on my Plusnet connection had problems contacting a certain web site - the
non-Plusnet site which hosts my weather station data. Sometimes I'd get very
long delays before a page would load - or more commonly the page would time
out.
And it only affected Linux-type devices: Windows PCs were fine. And it was
specific to the Plusnet connection. If I configured my mobile phone to share
its mobile internet connection and linked the computers to that, the same
devices that had failed to access the site were able to get through.
Twice the problem righted itself for a few days - it's in one of its
"working" phases at the moment. A LAN trace was a bit inconclusive because
it seemed to be the HTTP GET *request* from the browser that was delayed in
being sent, not the server *response* as I was expecting.
There was another site (IMDB's Sprinklr support forum) which failed to
respond to even a ping by name or by IP - but only for a specific PC on the
network. Rebooting the PC did not fix it. Rebooting the router (remaking the
VDSL connection) did.
All of this may be a complete coincidence, but it does make me wonder
whether Plusnet have got network problems.
