Is Plusnet email server down?

I get occasional messages (including notifications from PlusNet themselves) to my PlusNet mail address of the form us...@username.plus.com

But for the last couple of days Thunderbird stalls when trying to access imap.plus.net and so does my mobile phone, and attempting to log in to webmail.plus.net also fails to login every time with a time-out.

I don't have time today to hang on to the phone for the required time to ask their customer services, so just wondered if anyone else is experiencing problems currently?

Yes, the Plusnet mail servers have been down since about midnight. POP
servers either fail to respond (Force9.co.uk addresses) or else give "bad
password" (plus.com addresses) - that's my experience. I was able to send an
email this morning via their SMTP server, but that's failed now.

Webmail also fails: the front end validates username/password (and gives an
immediate error message if password is deliberately wrong) but times out if
correct details are given.

Last response on their forum was at about 0700 this morning. Someone on the
forum has heard that it's a DNS problem. No forecast for a fix, other than
that it's "more difficult that expected" to fix.

It is down, see:

... and they can't even keep their status up-to-date ...

There are rumours about a DNS problem. Does that mean they might have
done a Facebook and really screwed up the configuration of an internal
server?

They seem to be having a few DNS or other network problems over the past
month or so. Intermittently I found that all Android, Linux or iPad devices
on my Plusnet connection had problems contacting a certain web site - the
non-Plusnet site which hosts my weather station data. Sometimes I'd get very
long delays before a page would load - or more commonly the page would time
out.

And it only affected Linux-type devices: Windows PCs were fine. And it was
specific to the Plusnet connection. If I configured my mobile phone to share
its mobile internet connection and linked the computers to that, the same
devices that had failed to access the site were able to get through.

Twice the problem righted itself for a few days - it's in one of its
"working" phases at the moment. A LAN trace was a bit inconclusive because
it seemed to be the HTTP GET *request* from the browser that was delayed in
being sent, not the server *response* as I was expecting.

There was another site (IMDB's Sprinklr support forum) which failed to
respond to even a ping by name or by IP - but only for a specific PC on the
network. Rebooting the PC did not fix it. Rebooting the router (remaking the
VDSL connection) did.

All of this may be a complete coincidence, but it does make me wonder
whether Plusnet have got network problems.

No it still resolves, Earlier it was variously giving an error, or timing out,
now it's refusing connections.

This now says everything is OK, but I still see intermittent problems
when trying to connect to their mail server.

POP server is working: when I first tried it this morning, all the queued-up
emails from the previous 24 hours were downloaded quickly.

SMTP server is dead: I've not been able to send any email (times out)

Sending from another address (Gmail): messages to the Plusnet mailbox are
not arriving. I imagine there is a long backlog of external incoming mail
that is gradually being processed.

Webmail is unusable. It times out either at the logon prompt or else while
populating the Inbox page with message headers. Haven't been able to try
sending because I've not been able to get to the Write Message page.

So there's been some progress, but there's still a fair way to go.

yes about 3 emails received in one burp this morning, a couple have come in so
far since, and a test send from my offic365 account was received almost real-time.

> SMTP server is dead: I've not been able to send any email (times out)

not for me, I sent one email this morning and got a timely reply

sent a reply to the o365 test, and it did pause at "sending" for longer than
normal 0 seconds maybe, so it's probably quite busy

the reply arrived back to o365 quickly enough.

Server seems to be struggling back to life, can get emails again on smartphone, not on PC. Webmail exceedingly slow.

I think the sending problem depends on how you've got your email client
setup.

If you don't use SMTP authentication (ie if you're not specifying your POP
username/password) then it works. But you can only send from a Plusnet
connection - which is fine for a PC that's at home.

But if you use SMTP authentication (so Plusnet's SMTP server will allow you
to send from a non-Plusnet connection when a laptop/phone is out and about)
then that isn't working yet - I get timeouts or "server dropped connection".

Mine's using authentication with STARTTLS on port 587

I think the PlusNet mail is down again. It rejects my username/password
combo.

to a different IP address. If the old address is cached or - worse -
mapped in your Hosts file, you won't pick up the new address and your
mail won't work. I found out the hard way!

Not working now. I usually download through the Outlook client. But I can
access through their web page.

Also their status web page shows a red X on email.

Hosts. Their address is not in my Hosts file. My Hosts file lists al the
nasty sites not to load.
