Further to the various postings a couple of weeks ago, I've just had an
e-mail notifying of the closure (so they've finally got round to
admitting it....). Had the e-mail on my main freeserve.co.uk address.
Wonder if the same e-mail will appear in the other freeserve.co.uk
inboxes I've got.

Information link provided in the e-mail is:
http://ee.co.uk/help/mobile-and-home-connections/broadband-gallery-mobile-broadband/email/email-closure

I'm intrigued by one entry on the list of affected addresses (& that's a
copy/paste, so I'm not making it up!). I think someone at Orange is
'avin a larff cos the address concerned wasn't on the list of affected
addresses when I pdf'd the page on 8 Feb!

Which email addresses are affected?

The addresses affected by the closure are:

Orange.net
Orangehome.co.uk
Wanadoo.co.uk
Freeserve.co.uk
Fsbusiness.co.uk
Fslife.co.uk
Fsmail.net
Fsworld.co.uk
Fsnet.co.uk
new.labour.org.uk

The DNS for that domain is handled by virgin media with email handled by
microsoft

I suppose it makes sense for EE to stagger the notifications to a
certain extent to relieve the pressure on their helpline, but OTOH
when they pull the plug that's the time people are going to panic.

Speaking for myself, although this is a major inconvenience to me with
nearly 20 years worth of bespoke address variations, not to mention
them being the main contact for family and friends, I can't really
complain at EE for making this decision. I can't even remember making
much use of the FRIA dial-up accounts that they came with, I used
x-stream & libertysurf IIRC.

In short I see this as inevitable, and it's amazing it's lasted so
long.

You will also remember the bad old days when the server would cease to
respond, and you would have the chore of going to a website and
reactivate your accounts. I wonder what percentage of accounts they
managed to purge in that way?

I'm in the process of migrating all my subscriptions and memberships
over to Yahoo sub-accounts similar names. It's a big job.

If they'd charged a few quid a year, maybe they could have kept the
service running?

Yahoo. Seriously?! I persuaded my wife to move *from* them after her
account was compromised. She wasn't the only one.

I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

I got around these issues by setting up a home email server
using dynamic dns services and a bit of Ubuntu Linux and mail
server packages in Ubuntu.
Then I got all the other email services to BCC all the emails to the
home server.
I then set up spam filters so that all spam and spam dressed as
approved marketing from approved marketers all get binned.
Never looked back.
Any number of email providers can come and go, but the bcc
keeps all copies.

Count yourself lucky that they have bothered to actually inform you.

My ISP is EE formerly Orange formerly Wanadoo and I don't expect I'll
get notification until they work through the list alphabetically.

I wonder how many people whose connectivity to the net is by one of the
affected services have *not* been notified yet?
They all seem to be at it. At least this lot have given a decent length
of notice unlike Voodofone's trashing of Demon services (yet again).
