They've been talking about getting this sorted out for weeks now. I hope I
can be as slow and patchy with my direct debit payment?
No, it's not even connecting properly here today. However, it was only a
test as I normally use new.individual.net anyway.

Wotcha mate,
Good to hear from you again. I'm now up in Durham, and working in 'The

Ah, Durham. A very nice part of the world, and I've had an enjoyable 3
years here. But it's somebody else's turn for the fun!
Much nicer place than darn sarf.

Oh right, most of the people I know or knew who lived in the Beds / Herts
area seem to have either moved or are working away, there must be something
in the water...
How are you coping with the language ?! :~)
Glad to hear things are going well.

Indeed it is.
I never had a problem when we used to visit up that way, dad used to act as

LOL, yes, although I sometimes find it more the other way around :-)

Good stuff.
Okay, looking for recommendations for a reliable service on a 1Mb or 2Mb
connection, preferably on a monthly charge.
All comments welcomed.
Note, this posting will appear about 12 hours after I have sent it, if you
are using Plusnet for Usenet.

Well, here's the rub, you *might* have to look at text only, in which
case go to www.individual.net and get a free account. If you want
binaries you may be out of luck as I found when trying to use Teranews.
Plusnet do block attempts to obtain binary news feeds.
OTOH if you have a full blast broadband package you might be OK.
Only for accounts that are specifically restricted and stated as such. I
think this applies to just two accounts.
> OTOH if you have a full blast broadband package you might be OK.
I think all the currently advertised accounts allow binary news feeds, P2P,
etc. The cheaper ones are restricted by having download limits so may not
be appropriate for significant binary downloads but that is different to
actually blocking those services.

Yes, one I'm on.

No, they actually block binary news feeds.

WHAT??? That's insane!

That's why he said 'all *currently advertised* accounts'. None of the
accounts available for new users block binary feeds - only the old HomeSurf
and BizSurf accounts.

Only on the accounts that are £3/month cheaper due to this very restriction
(along with no p2p)!
Phil
Hi ex RHAer are you, like me, waiting for the promised return? :-)
As Phil said, on only two accounts that are cheaper for that reason, and it
is clear from the account info that was available before signup that there
is no access to binary groups and no P2P on those accounts.
None of the currently advertised ADSL accounts have this restriction. The
cheaper accounts now have a monthly download limit so, within that, you can
do what you like.

That is correct, although it wasn't clear that paying for another
service would be blocked.
Let's face it, with the current state of their news server, it is
reasonable to cut the price of my service and choose another news feed.
What is unclear about "no access to binary groups and no P2P "

Indeed.

My assumption was that this was from their own servers. Perhaps a bad
implication on their part?

Or Email, as that has now failed tonight, yet again.
Having read all the initial reviews about PlusNet, I am now beginning to
have my doubts as to me choice.

How did you guess? I seem to be a bit of a jinx for ISPs - from
RedHotAnt I went to VCISP (resold by the Register) which went bust and
kept taking money for months afterwards despite many letters (recorded
etc.)!

ah well, that's fair enough then, the OP didn't make that clear.
Cheers!

No P2P should have given you the clue that all services that might use
significant bandwidth were barred.

Give them time, once they have finished upgrading all the "peripheral"
services that have been left until it is almost/very much too late they will
be fine, until it is time to start the upgrades again.
All the others seem to be eagerly awaiting their return so I guessed you
would be also. :-)

I was wary after RHA and avoided the cheap offers. Went with BT whilst I
surveyed the landscape. Eventually settled for Plusnet FRIACO then BB when
it became available to me. On the whole they have been good but there is a
bad patch pattern. A service begins to go downhill and the complaints
start. When it looks like becoming a significant problem Plusnet announce
that they will do something. When it actually is a significant problem
Plusnet do do something, usually before that something is ready. Further
problems then ensue that can last for days, or weeks in the case of the
current usenet problem, Once sorted it is usually fine for some time but,
of course, some other service then starts to be a problem and so it goes on.

Don't think the OP could have read the account details properly before
signing up.

Yes, poor T&C IMHO, they should be explicit rather than implied.

Yes, what goes around, comes around. I was with NTL for quite some time,
they were pants at one time, but actually got pretty good for a while.
>Yes, poor T&C IMHO, they should be explicit rather than implied.
I think the account name might have given a clue - Home Surf - and the
underlying and presumably non-obvious implication was a lower traffic
expectation by blocking binaries and peer-to-peer applications. PGM

Why? You could call it what you like.

No, the fact that binaries and peer to peer were not available to me was
clearly included in the T&C. It was not clear that I couldn't subscribe
to an external service.
FWIW, I *can* use Limewire without a problem, and BitTorrent works as
well. Neither of which should.
However, when I was attempting to subscribe to an alternative news
server, which wasn't free, it got blocked. I wouldn't mind at all if
their own server works, but why would I want to even consider paying
extra to use the binaries on the PlusNet server when it doesn't actually
work properly?
It's not even that I use binaries much at all anyway, I am of the view
that binaries don't belong on usenet anyway.
>It was not clear that I couldn't subscribe to an external service.
with hindsight, and it might seem rude of me, but did you ask PlusNet ?

I have a feeling of 'deja vu' but it is late, so here goes again - you
see it as a surcharge to use the PlusNet news server, I see it as you
having a discount to be a low(er) traffic user. Pulling news from a
separate service outside PlusNet bumps up their traffic level (OK, it
is under 0.1% at a guess :-) but they seemed to market Home Surf for a
user who would not need binaries and not use peer-to-peer. While I can
agree their own server was poor on completion for binaries for the past
umpteen months (if not for all time), they would respond to that with a
suggestion that one use a commercial service. As you may know, the aim
now is to be on a par with any other UK ISP for news, and I suspect it
is not far off becoming the truth. I'm planning to open another Clara
account so I will be able to see how the two compare, and perhaps get
fills from Clara if I find parts missing. Peter M.

Er no. I chose to have a service that doesn't supply me with binary
newsgroups or P2P, which is fine. As far as I'm aware all the other
services are still available to me.

Correct, but I don't have any limitation to my other downloads.

Yup, that is what I was wanting to do, although I don't want binaries in
particular.

Quite possibly, although my only experience is with NTL:, which isn't
much comparison.
