Just to keep it on-topic, BTO have told me I cannot have ADSL because
my line is DACS'd and it would be too expensive for them - Is there
anyway that BT can be forced/convinced to put in a proper line?

I have noticed a LOT of crackling on it recently ( it's a 100% modem
line ), can I play on this in anyway...

Not easily but it's worth a try. Failing that you could always get a new
phone line put in specifying that it should be non DACS then after it's been
ADSL'd get the old DACS line removed.

You can explain your situation to them, i.e. you would like to get ADSL on
the line and this cannot be done whilst the DACS is in place. You'll be
lucky to get them to remove it though.

Interesting. It's definitely a possibility. I'm not so sure that their
first (any?) course of action would be to remove the DACS though.

When i first had my new line installed back in April last year,

The buggers DACS my phone with my other house line.
Course this was noticed immediatly going from a good strong connection
to a piss up the wall!

I MADE the sods remove it by saying i would rip out the thing myself and
smash it to pieces and leave it down the exchange steps.

3 hours later.....rest is history !!

Well, with that kind of approach you're likely to have either the engineers
or the police on your doorstep... don't think the police would make it in 3
hours though =)

Its harsh but a good threat at the end of the day, course you dont actually
have to do it !!

If i said to BT, "well ok, i guess i had a nice strong conection before i
had this extra line put in
which was for the internet in the first place!, but i dont mind now
connecing at 16kbs"
Not only would the internet be as much good as a chocolate teapot, but i
would be
having the problems which people left with DACS are now.

Get tuf with them!!

Rip the thing out and then tell them it "stopped working".

Repeat, until they get the message.

OK, so my first step is to talk to them, and try to convince them to
remove my DACS. Has anyone got any idea which department is the one
that is most likely to be sympathetic!!

You might want to try contacting BT complaints review.

Tell them you are on the verge of going to oftel, and explain that your
current service is so poor as to be nonexistant, and that your sick of
it and want to resolve it by changing your line to a normal one so you
can convert it to dsl.

inform them that unless they provide you with this solution you will
cancel your account, get a cable line and then sue them for the line
rental you have paid.

that tends to get them moving. If in dobt refer to, and quote:

I battled with BT for almost 2 years to get the DACS removed from my line! I
would've smashed it to pieces in a effort to get shot of it, but if you look
in the small print, I believe it says in there that the equipment is the
property of BT. Meaning that any deliberate damaged done, BT could prosecute
for criminal damage or similar!

Getting the second line cancelled doesn't get the DACS removed either. . . I
tried that as well! In the end it was a persistent fault on the line that
got another engineer out (one who had visited on a previous attempt to have
it removed!), who asked the usual question of "Is your second line working
ok?" When I said we don't have one anymore, he promptly ripped it off the
wall! :o)

You can battle with the people at the other end of the phone all you like
(management included), but at the end of the day the only people who can
really help are the engineers!

Not if you make it look like it broke, loosen a wire inside or
something.

My line was DACSed when I neighbour had a second line added, The reason DACS
units are installed is if there are insufficient pairs somewhere between you
and the exchange. They are multiplexer units installed in pairs and allow 2
lines down one pair, so as far as modems are concerned your line now has 50%
of previous bandwidth.

BT will (and can) only remove the DACS unit if there are then free pairs at
a later date. So what you need to do is sweet talk the BT engineer to check
and see if there are now any free pairs, or he can re-shuffle the existing
setup to free one up.

This may be out of date but BT policy at one time was "an analogue line must
support voice calls at an acceptable volume and data calls at 19k/s) If a
user is reliant upon data transmission, then the correct package is one of
our data services, e.g ISDN, Leased Line, Frame relay ...)

SUMMARY

If you are dealing with DACS, tell the people on the phone that you are
suffering with a very quiet line (say that you are NOT calling from the line
in question)
once the engineer arrives try and sweet talk him into checking to see if
there are any lines free. (I used a for of bribery, i.e he mentioned that he
was looking to buy PC for his daughter, but wasn't sure what to get, I said
that if he removed the DACS I would spend as long as he wanted explaining
the choices to him (I was his last call of the day))

Hope this helps

DACS free Will

You can't do that! They will be able to see where you are calling from!
