Its a special plug which sends your broadband connection through the mains
electricity instead of ethernet cables or wireless. They claim it is more
stable than wireless connection.
Quite expensive, you need one for the router and one for each computing
device - at £38 each that can run out at quite expensive.
Wondering if anyone has used them and whether they are any good?

well.

They work within even a large house, including through extension cables,
as long as no inductive device blocks the signal (e.g. 2 parts of a
building each with their own mains distribution box and RCD). The 14
Mbps ones can be had for around 25 pounds, e.g.

wireless isn't an option.

These need to be distinguished from broadband supplied over the
electricty network. These are devices for running your internal
network over your internal wiring.
I've used them for about a year in my house after getting fed up with
wireless dropouts, and slow wireless performance on the fringes of the
wireless AP range.
I'm running five of the adapters (3x PCs, 1x VoIP adapter, 1x DSL
router) and have had no problems at all.
They also include functionality that encypts the data sent over the
cables so that others in your street on the same phase can't see your
data.
I've had no problems with range at all -- they work all over the house
and via extension cables and so forth. The only downside is that the
speed is limited to 10Mbps, so you could get a lot faster if you were
to go "properly" cable.

Have you used them with a games console?
I used a pair of ether-over-power devices recently (don't rmember
which make, sorry) and they did exactly what they said on the box, and
in-general were OK (until one of them blew-up, but thats another story)
The electric meter forms an effective barrier to them - so your neighbour
won't be able to see your data. You can get bridges for electric meters,
but unless you are a landlord, selling internet to your bed-sit tennants
who each have their own electric meter you don't want them!
And they won't pass data past those extension blocks which have built-in
filters either.

Electricity meters do not provide a block between neighbours. They are
not designed to be filters. Signals are obliged to come into your
house from the Service Provider VIA the meter.
In any case, meters are bypassed. Power and other cables can run
closely in parallel with each other for considerable distances on
opposite sides of a neighbour's adjoining wall.
Broadband signals are at radio frequencies. They will find their way
everywhere around your and your neighbour's properties. Electric light
wiring makes an ideal radio transmitting and receiving aerial.
And your modern, flourescent, power saving, electric light bulbs make
excellent radio noise transmitters.
But of course, the further you are away from your nearest neighbour
the less is the likelihood of mutual interference.
The received radio frequency interference and noise power decays at a
rate proportional to the square of the distance between neighbour's
properties.
But you can't separate your computer very far from your own electric
light bulbs, TV receiver, dimmer switches, central heating
thermostats, etc., etc.
The ultimate solution to noise and interference problems is to bring
an optical fibre from the telephone exchange to everybody's front
door. But the equipment and installation costs would be enormous.
We should have to bring back our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan to
help pay for it.
So the first thing to do to improve Internet performance is to lock-up
criminal warmonger Blair, in chains, in a dungeon, in rags, in
solitary confinement, in the Tower of London. Throw away the key into
the Thames as far as possible and then forget all about him.

No. But as long as your games console has an ethernet port, I can't
see why it wouldn't work -- there is no logic/drivers needed within the
console to work with the power-adapter.
That said, if you want to use encryption, generally you need to
configure that on a Windows PC -- once the device is configured you can
use it anywhere without needing anything installed on the other PC,
Mac, console... etc etc.

Liken it to plugging your laptop into the network in the office... but
rather than plugging your drop wire into your PC and a network port at
your desk, you plug it into your PC and this adapter...

Strange. I would never expect Solwise to touch them until Steve has given
a verdict on them, and that would be after some heavy testing, I'd think.

Another firm selling them is Solwise (.co.uk) along with NDO/NamesCo (as an
add on when ordering ADSL) plus http://www.justhomeplug.co.uk/ but no
doubt there are a number of "home plug" sellers with different domains <-:
I bought a bunch of them through Solwise. I called Steve and asked him
about using them to connect an ATA for VoIP. He reassured me, so I went
ahead. I've never had a moment's problem with any of them. I even have
my MP3 player connected via one. They're also useful for allowing
visitors to use your network without giving them your WEP or WPA key.

The Data signals are supposed to supressed by the consumer unit...
The ones I have come across so far have a far more effective range
than wifi & are far more secure (you don't leave any hotspots to be
hacked) & above all they work consistently which in some circumstances
wifi doesn't.
To the OP it's 'older' technology & on the face of it offers a
slightly slower speed than wifi, but when you take into considerations
the trus speeds which you do get with wifi, it can easily out perform.

Perhaps that was rough wording for devices between the ring mains and
supply-side wiring such as an RCD or electricity meter, which do contain
inductive components in line with the signal.

block chat down the line, plus you /are/ expected to use encryption.

No.
You're thinking of powerline networking, not homeplug. The latter is a
domestic distribution mechanism and is contained within one circuit of
your domestic install. The former is an ADSL-equivalent using the
national grid.

This is all fascinating, but no different to ethernet, about which you
could make the same arguments. For experimental purposes, try
detecting this radio signal near a power cable sometime.

The earth-leakage circuit breakers are pretty effective filters to
high-frequency signals. From this you can deduce that homeplug may not
even work inside your house, if you have different rings for the
different floors (which is common in new installations).

Euh, and how would you connect the PC up to it? Think about it... the
PC expects to recieve data through its network connection (or maybe a
USB connection).
Anyway... the unit takes an ethernet signal from your router, convert
it and inject it into your power ring. Another identical unit then
collects the signal and sends it to your pc over an ethernet cable.
