I have 3 machines here at home, 2 desktops and a laptop.
I have broadband internet access via Plusnet ADSL 512k service.

Currently only the laptop and one desktop are network connected (cabled) and
have access to the internet via ICS.
I need to now add the 3rd machine to the network, and also give it internet
access.

The current situation is that the 2 machines i have networked share the
connection through a USB modem, so when i use the laptop downstairs, the
desktop upstairs is 'redundant', but of course needs to be powered on to
allow ICS access. This in itself isn't a problem because it simply goes into
stand-by and still allows use of the shared printer.

The network is a simple TCP/IP peer 2 peer set up using Win XP. I plug a
short crossover cable into a connection point downstairs that i cabled
through the house. What i don't want to have to do is cable through the
house for a 3rd machine, and add a hub of course.

I would like to go down the wireless route, but really don't know quite
where to start looking for hardware.

Ideally, i would like a wireless hub/router/modem ..... this would allow me
to connect all three machines to the internet /and/ each other via a
wireless router connection, and give me the ability to have a network not
dependant on any one machine being powered on to access the internet.
Wireless would also give me scope to use the laptop away from the place i
currently have to use it. The only problem i will have of course, is that i
won't have access to my printer if the desktop it is connected to is off,
but i can live with that.

Some ideas of which hardware would do what i'm looking to achieve would be
most useful...

There is an excellent article "The nitty-gritty of networking" at
http://www.pcw.co.uk/Features/1135699

It is quite comprehensive and gives recommended makes and models of the
relevant hardware, as well as ball park prices (in British pounds).

It sounds as though the set up I have would meet all your needs. It's not
necessarily the cheapest but it works for me.

I have the SMC7004AWBR and SMC7401BRA. Specs available from
http://www.smc-europe.com/english/ prices available from http://www.dabs.com
.

The 7004 is a router/print-server with 3 port 10/100 hub and wireless
access. It has a 10 Mbit RJ45 connection for an ADSL modem, a parallel port
for a printer and a serial port for a dial up connection.

The 7401 is an ADSL modem/router with a 10 Mbit RJ45 connection and a USB
connection. I believe I could have got a cheaper modem but the two boxes
have a similar design so they look good together :-)

I have three machines directly connected to the hub on the 7004 and I have a
laptop connected via wireless. The 7004 is connected to the 7401 via LAN and
the 7401 connects to the phone line. All the machines can access the
internet independently of each other and they can all print without being
dependent on another machine. I also have a modem connected to the 7004 so I
can use a dial up connection if ADSL goes down. I use the USB connection to
the 7401 if I need to flash the firmware (I had problems when I tried to do
it via the LAN) but this also provides another direct connection if I have
another machine that needs to connect to the internet.

Dave.

The Lioncom 4 port adsl switch adsl router at £99 will give you 4 switch
ports and the D-link 22 Mbps wireless bundle at £130 gives you a 2.4Ghz
access point and 1 2.4 Ghz PC card.

I guess what i'm really after knowing, is what types of component that i'll
need to make up the configuration i mention.
i.e. will i need a router, wireless access point, or what?

I'm not too sure quite which components would make up what i need to do. I
have seen some packages on offer, but i'm not sure if they contain the type
of things i need.

In a nutshell, as previously, i would have 2 desktop PC's (one of which
would have a printer attached, as it being powered on isn't an issue) and a
laptop. I would maybe lose the current USB modem though, and move to a
router/hub/modem combination setup. Of course, it all needs to be wireless
so far as connecting the 2nd desktop and laptop are concerned. The 'primary'
desktop needn't be, as that is right next to the phone access point where
the router/modem would be sited anyway.

Sorry to be so clueless, but i would prefer to get this right first time
;-)
