Been looking at my broadband options and seen that SSE do broadband with
some *very* interesting deals.

Google doesn't report much feedback on them.

Anyone have any comments or experience of them?

an acquaintance has just gone over to SSE and it seems that their deal
for 76 mbps is free for 18 months and line rental for £16. got to be
worth a try.
Don't know what their upload speed is.

Suggest you look at uSwitch as they also have some very good offers
(on SIM-only as well.)

They clearly don't use BT's FTTC cabs, only offer 1.5Mbps ADSL here, I'm
on ~80Mbps from Plusnet, line rental £13.49/m, broadband £8/m,
presumably the 18month free only applies for fibre?

A relative has just gone for it. Their operation seems to be a bit like
easyjet / ryan air.

i.e.

£3.50 per feature per month or 4 features for £7.25 per month for any of
the following features:
Call barring, Caller display, Call diversion, Ringback, Call waiting,
3-way calling, Call sign and Call reminder

IMO Caller Display should be a basic right, i.e. Free.

So he has gone without that and will be slaming the phone down on the
first uttered consonant of a spam caller (or not!)

From my reading, they're offering 40/10 and 80/20.

As long as it works I'm okay with that.

That's useful to know. Plusnet are similar, so we don't use caller id
currently. Not a big deal for us.

Plusnet do charge for caller display - but only 99p per month - so it's
not a show stopper. I used to get it free from BT but got fed up with
the ever increasing number of hoops I had to jump through in order to
qualify - so switched to PN. Now I do at least know where I stand!

I did think PN were cheaper, but didn't check.

I am seriously considering switching to SSE when we move house, but will
see what PN will do to encourage me to stay with them.

: BT charge ?1.25 pm now!

Free in return for taking out a 12 month contract.

I am suprised that Plusnet still charge. It is not much money but is annoying
all the same!

AFAIK they do.

I believe they use Openreach for delivery and their
backhaul/provisioning is using Daisy Wholesale.

My opinion is obviously biased, but I've seen anecdotal evidence on the
Think Broadband forums etc. that speeds can be variable.

Whether that's anything to do with their traffic management policy, or
congestion/capacity constraints I don't know.

OK, well their speed predictor is using data that's well over a year old
then, I gave it my phone line and postcode which should have let it see
FTTC is available here.

Throttled, or contended? They are quite different concepts.

speed drops from 70 mbps at off peak to 10-20 at peak, SSE say there
could be a problem with the lines, but obviously there isn't.

I can understand that the speed has reduced, but nothing you've added
indicates whether it's throttling or contention.

On one hand the ISP might publish the fact they throttle speed at
certain time of day. On the other hand if the "top limit", is extremely
consistent from day to day, or hour to hour, then that would indicate
throttling, whereas an inconsistent one would be more suggestive of
contention.
