Well, now I have resolved the draytek/syslog issues I have a more
complete log around the LCP Timeout. I have appended the (hopefully)
relevant part of the log to this message. It seems as if someone or
something is trying to connect to me using VPN, I don't use VPN at all
so it's not me! :-) Is there anything I can or should do about this?

Then disable it ...

from the user manual

V-1-3 Remote Access Control
Enable the necessary VPN service as you need.

so disable all four VPN services

PPTP, L2TP, IPsec, SSL

Having said that, if you didn't want the VPN facility why did you get a
V2860? There are cheaper routers that don't offer a VPN service.

I use a V2860 because I use its VPN capability - and I see login
attempts once or twice per day.

Yes, obvious really, thanks. I don't quite understand why they were
all enabled but they were. Now all turned off.

Mine is a 2860n, no V prefix, I use quite a lot of its other abilities.

The V is for Vigor - it's the same product. I agree many of the other
features are useful, and missing from cheaper routers

Are you deliberately trying to establish a PPTP tunnel to somewhere in

Ooh! That sounds a bit worrying. :-)

I've turned off all the VPN in my router now.

It seems all the Drayteks do this. It invariably reminds me of that

of their software designer, but who knows...

I think SHOWTIME is actually a valid connection status isn't it?

"showtime" is a defined state in the ITU G.992 spec that means all
initialisation is complete.

Unless your ISP needs access I would limit the IP addresses that can
access the router to whatever the local LAN IP range is.

I don't use Draytek any more but they used to be able to do it.
A bit of Googleing should tell you how

Remote access is always a trade off between need and security, make sure
you definitely need it.

I'm not sure that the Draytek firewall directly affects VPNs.

I already have the firewall set so that external access is quite
limited, SMTP (I run a mail server on my desktop) is limited to my
hosting service's IPs as that's where my mail comes from and ssh
access is limited to only two IPs.

The above firewall settings weren't preventing the VPN attempts that
caused the LCP timeout that started this thread.

Or if you are really paranoid close every port and protocol that you are
not actually using yourself. You might want to try ShieldsUp to check if
there are any other vulnerabilities still lurking.

Really? I wonder where they got it from? Somehow it doesn't seem a

I haven't seen "SHOWTIME" (and it's always in capitals) anywhere other
than in the status pages of Draytek devices.
