Upgrade from ADSL to VDSL - how long until download speed improves?

We were upgraded from ADSL to VDSL several days ago but unfortunately the
change was only activated after we'd set off for several days holiday, so
I've only now been able to reconfigure the router to use VDSL rather than
ADSL.

The router is reporting sync speeds of 41,000 kbps D and 7800 kbps U, and
SNRs of about 6 dB for both up and down.

However Speedtest.net is still reporting download speed of about 4300 kbps,
even though it is reporting upload speed of about 7000 kbps. So actual
download speed is about 1/10 of what the sync speed would predict.

How long does it typically take for the download speed reported by
speedtest.net and mybroadbandspeed.co.uk to start to come close to what the
sync speed would suggest is achievable?

Is there a delay while the exchange adjusts to having a reconfigured router
to talk to? Even allowing for contention, should achievable speed match sync
speed a bit more closely? Will the fact that the exchange was upgraded
several days ago but there has only been a WAN connection for a couple of
hours (since I reconfigured the router) have set things back a bit?

You don't mention your previous ADSL speed, nor your ISP. Have you tried
disconnecting your session (keeping the modem powered up) - probably a
"button" on the router status page? It is possible this may be needed
for your ISP's VDSL download profile to become effective, replacing the
ADSL profile.

I used to get about 6000/800 sync and speedtest gave about 4000-5000 and
700-800 kbps. After the upgrade to VDSL, I get 41000/7000 sync and speedtest
gives 4500/7000 (D/U).

The ISP is Plusnet.

I've tried disconnected and reconnecting the session and rebooting the
router. but neither makes any difference.

Tell Plusnet.

Rod.

Some time back you mentioned "crackles" on your phone line. Do you still
have them or did that issue get sorted?

I contacted PM support and they found that the profile settings were wrong.
They nudged them and everything is fine now - 38 down and 7 up. Problem
solved.

Oh, and the crackles. They seemed to get sorted at some point - maybe one of
the engineer visits or maybe in adjusting the wiring in the cabinet to
separate voice and data.
