Hi all,

I'm looking for a good broadband speed checker - i think some of them
on the web are a little biast - or at least seem to be.

Some guy on here www.traffictalk.co.uk - told me to use BT's but I
don't think that's any good.

Quite a few people of www.traffictalk.co.uk say that - get on there
and sort em out!

:-)

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

It's the ONLY one that's capable of reporting my connection's true capabilities.

That's NOT 'maxing out' by a LONG way depending on your conection statistics.

Try http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

That's fucking ridiculous but what els would you expect from Tiscali ?

" Your current bandwidth reading is: 1.14 Mbps
which means you can download at 145.8 KB/sec. from our servers "

And the bbmax test just returned a figure of nearly 7000 kbps !

I'm puzzled by the seemingly slow up speed.

I haven't had the pleasure of finding that out. It certainly registers a 'score' of
greater than 7000 kbps for my connection at times.

So, you are connected at 1.14Mbps, and can download max at 145kbytes/s..

And you are getting a speed test that says you are getting 7Mbps?

The problem is what do you want to check?
Your connection cannot be faster than the slowest link in the chain.
If your ISP has a speed checker, then at off peak times,
you should see roughly your down BRAS speed.
If your ISP doesn't give you access to your profile
it may be because they don't want you to know.
If you have a shiddy ISP with insufficient backhaul bandwidth
then speed checkers, other than your ISP's will give poor
speeds.
Worst case if you use one of the Stateside speed checkers at
peak times, say around 8-10pm in the UK then your speed will
probably be appalling.
All this is before you take into account traffic shaping. If there
is traffic shaping then P2P may be very slow, slow because of
your ISP's traffic shaping, and maybe only one or two seeds
with slow upload speeds.

No I'm NOT. I'm synched at 8128 kbps with a 7150 kbps profile.

1.14 Mbps is what the fucking USELESS Tiscali tests says !

Do WAKE UP.

It seems to be better than your old one was. It's within 1% of the bbmax test. Is
that because you have more bandwidth now ?

Nah, it's software related. The old one was built in house before the
days of IPStream Max and the higher speed cable/LLU services.

It's will be similar to the bbmax test as they both use the same software:

download DU Meter and install

then find 3-5 broadband speed checkers

all different

run them all at the same time and then see what speed you get with DU Meter.
thats your true speed!!

i dont think any speed test out there will max out a 20mbit connection

i think about 4mbit should be fine though

'F'-word.... again ? Been on the beer, have we ? lol

I think everyone's already aware that with a bit of Googling one can find a
dozen or so speed test Sites. Common sense *will* prevail when individual
tests show consistently different results from the average... Errr... wont
it ?

Let's get a grip. No more f'ing, please. You are actually old enough to be
paying the bills, aren't you ?.

Unfortunately the alleged common sense doesn't stop some people posting links
to idiotic speedtesters that give worthless results like the one above.
