Missing Subtitle track

I used get-iplayer last night to download the Bear Grylls episode of
"Who do you think etc". When I looked at what I had this morning,
instead of the usual *.srt subtitle file, there is a *.txt file. And
when I used Handbrake to convert the recording to an m4v file for the
Humax, it did not include any subtitles. Trying to add the .txt file
during vlc playback did not work either.
Any ideas what went wrong? Has BBC's iPlayer changed the rules again?
