A friend of mine, who is a good car mechanic, but not particularly
interested in domestic electrical devices, has just bought a new Humax
Freeview Play PVR to replace the ageing VCR.
The first thing to do was to get it working just connected to the
antenna, as there is no internet cable to the room yet, but it appears
to really, really want to be on the internet. When he went through the
start-up procedure, and kept on clicking 'NO' to the options for
internet connection, WiFi connection, etc, it asked him if he wanted
to proceed, but warned him that this was 'Not Recommended'. How else
was he supposed to get it working? He thought at first that it might
have been about to self-destruct.

He took the plunge, and it now works properly. From the antenna. He
will worry about the internet when their service has been moved to Zen
instead of BT.

Assuming that he's got an internet router somewhere in the house with a
spare ethernet port, he can easily get internet to the Humax by using a
couple of power line devices without waiting for any cables to be installed.

Having told it that there's no internet available, I hope that it will
let him tell it that there is one after all without having to do a
factory reset and start all over again!

Even if he does have to do that, it shouldn't be a big problem.

Indeed, there is one upstairs, although it is on a terrible BT
agreement until the contract runs out, when it will be switched to Zen.
This is the province of his wife, however, he does not compute.

Ignoring the debate about the effects of RF transmission from Powerline
devices, about which he is probably totally unaware, he is in no hurry
for an ethernet connection. As mentioned, the Humax is a replacement
for the ageing VCR, and so its requirement is merely that it works with
Freeview as sent from Tacolneston. Its internet abilities merely came
along for the ride, maybe never to be used.
This type of machine and its variants may well be all that Humax offers
soon.
