Now that Euronews is on Eurobird and in the Sky EPG I set the language
to French, which is the most used language in this particular
household.

When I go back to the BBC channels the subtitles are no longer active.

Ironically, the very fact that makes the French soundtrack on Euronews
useful is the same that makes the subtitles on BBC useful.

Hello Simon,

I would imagine that once you change the preferred language to French, then
the digibox will be searching for French subitles which of course it won't
find. Bear in mind that Sky and in particular the BBC channels are only
designed to cater for the UK market.

Hello Rolf,

Yes, I had worked that out.
It is still very crappy software. My Canal Satellite box, which is
almost as blinkered as my Sky box, just simply has a "+" button, which
enables me to select subtitles and language without leaving the
channel.

I think it is a bit silly to link the subtitles with the language
selection, and even sillier to have to go into the set up menu to
change either. It is useful to be able to turn the subtieles on and
off quickly, depending on who in the family is watching the TV. People
in the family who don't want the subtitles may find them obtrusive
when the hard-of-hearing/non-English person is out, and it really is
very cumbersome to go through the menus to switch them on and off.

Euronews are transmitting in loads of languages from that orbital
position. Most of the dishes ponting that way are in the UK, so they
are looking to the increasingly large number of people living in the
UK but speaking French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish etc as
their first language.

I think that the launch of multilingual Euronews on Eurobird simply
shows up the sloppy software design on the Digibox.

Got one. Now where did I leave the instruction leaflet?

I think so too - It's not something I've though about with Sky..because
there weren't really any channels broadcasting in more than one language
until now (except S4C2). The ONdigital box software, which I presume is
based on Canal+'s software allows you to change the soundtrack language and
subtitle language independently.

Another by-product of the foolish idea to stop broadcasting teletext
subtitles. With S4C/2 you could have commentary in one language, but
select 888 for the other. It's frustrating that Sky chose to lock the
use of subtitles so heavily.

Same goes for the Nokia 9800 digi sat box. You just press the green (I
think) button and a little menu pops up which you can select from the
available audio/subtitles and even change between 16:9/4:3 on widescreen
programmes.

How do you set Euronews to a language other than English? And is there a
way I can receive German speaking channels? I want to improve my foreign
language skills, and it seems to me that watching TV in other languages
might be one way to do it.

You can change the language on Euronews by going into the set up menu,
then clicking on Language/subtitles.

You can get loads of German (and other) channels on a Digibox if you
connect it to a dish pointing at Astra 1. You can use your old Sky
analogue dish if you left it in place and it has a universal LNB.

Looks like I spoke too soon!

The new software, with the Personal Planner, doesnt't do this.

I can now have Euronews in French and subtitles on BBC1.

Still, it would be nice to be able to swtich the subtitles off when
they are not needed without having to go into the setup menu.

Thanks Simon. I only have the one dish currently, so I really need to
leave it pointing at the satellite that has the mainstream channels I am
paying for, but are there any other channels I can get with my current
setup.

Yes, sorry I *know* this is a FAQ, but unfortunately it's not previously
been answered in a way I can understand )-: Can you or anyone give me a
pointer to simple background reading so I can ask more
intelligent-sounding questions in the future? I have looked on the
SatHelp site, but even that assumes some background technical knowledge,
like knowing what the various satellites are called!

Ah! That would be far too simple for Sky. I've longed for a function
(not a macro-into-the-menus-for-you one) where the yellow key, say,
can turn on and off digital subtitles and where the green turned
letterbox mode on and off (for my World News Tonight frustrations, in
particular.) One easy solution would be for Sky to return to the dual
use of teletext subtitles, but it seems unlikely to happen.
