I've had a Labgear distribution amplifier in my loft since about 1973. It is
a metal-cased device and runs cold. Not line powered though. The company
still exists:

Alas your faith in the continuity of brand names is misguided.

Sorry to disappoint you but Labgear Ltd. [1], the company, no longer
exists. It went into administration early in 2004 and all operations
ceased more or less immediately. The intellectual property and other
assets were sold to Philex Electronic Ltd. and 'Labgear' now only exists
as a brand name used by Philex.

I should know, I worked for them from 1978 until the bitter end in 2004.

[1] Labgear went through some company name changes in the 80s and 90s -
Labgear Cablevision Ltd. and Teleste Cablevision Ltd., eventually
returning to just Labgear Ltd. These were all the same company really.
