I have a dual Panasonic vhs/dvd recorder.

Today (after some years of trouble-free use) it presents a bright green
screen (on the TV, obviously) when DVD is selected. If I try to record
anything on DVD, it records a bright green screen. However, sound is
OK.

If I switch it to VHS, however, all is well. It sees and records and
shows a proper picture.

I wonder if anyone knows where the bright green screen has come from?

I think you will find that it is recording sound and vision correctly to
DVD. You can prove this by playing the recorded DVD in another compatible
player.

I note your observation about the VHS video recordings being OK but unless
the DVD recorder has developed a fault the problem will be the connection to
TV.

Concentrate on finding out why the DVD output is now green. If the
connection is scart, remove any RF connection to TV, remove any other
'daisy-chained' equipment, only use the scart connection on the DVD recorder
marked 'TV'. Try changing the scart cable.

Favourites are:

The SCART lead being loose in one or other machine, so that the Red
and/or Blue signals are no longer connection.

One or more broken wires in the SCART lead. Try replacing it with
another.

A change in the menu of one or other machine which has reconfigured
the signals sent/expected by its SCART to no longer agree with the
other. Check the menu settings on both agree on the standard used,
probably RGB.

Thanks. I will try. But the weird thing is, I can play already-recorded
DVDs fine. Which suggests to me that the connection to TV is fine?

So, are you saying that it will display straight through, or its own input
signal and play old dvds, or is it just already recorded dvds on the same
machine which it plays, and sill it play commercial dvds?

It sounds like something has been misconfigured on the recorder to me, but I
guess the proof of the pudding is whether the dvds that only have sound will
play in another machine.

FWhat is the source of what you're recording? Is it a builtin tuner or
an external box of some description?
VHS records (and will show) composite video. The DVD will be looking
at an RGB signal. As you have sound it appears as if the internal DVD
component of your box isn't getting the 'full picture'. Have you tried
an external source (or is it that already)?

Well, this is the full situation.

The DVD is taking a signal from a PVR, which it sees as A2. However it
can also take a signal from the TV (A1). The green screen-with-sound
applies to both inputs (but see below).

Pre-recorded (commercial) DVDs play perfectly.

When switched to VHS, all is well.

The DVD has never been tuned to a direct external source. It is an
analogue machine, and I only have Freeview here. It is used mainly to
archive recordings to DVD from the PVR.

However, this morning the green screen has vanished and all appears to
be back to normal.

Mmm could be the SCART from the PVR, carries the component video/audio
etc, also the RGB on separate pins.
I've seen something similar with a loose SCART lead before and I
though my TV had packed up. Replaced the SCART for one that fit more
snugly and problem went away. It doesn't take much for some leads to
get 'dislodged'. Hope it stay that way though :D

Because if it was black you wouldn't know if it was working.
