I see Lidl is selling the satellite dish & associated stuff
in Ireland next Thursday.
I wonder if I would see anything with this dish of the slightest interest
that is not already available to me thanks to Sir Rupert Murdoch?

Have a look at http://www.lyngsat.com/ to see what you're missing and you
won't need Murdoch's help!

I looked at this list,
but it seemed to consist largely if not entirely
of much the same menu as Sky -
religious programs in Bangladeshi, etc.

I didn't study it closely,
but at a quick glance I didn't see anything not available on Sky
which would appeal to me.

Could you indicate a couple of stations which you find interesting
which are not broadcast on Sky?

I had in mind satellites other than Astra @ 28.2°E (the group that carries
Sky etc.) such as Hotbird 13°E or Astra 19.2°E where you will find dozens of
TV and radio stations. If you are buying a dish, LNB etc., a little
experimenting will be worth it! Don't forget that Sky is just a broadcaster,
not a satellite!!

Go to the Lyngsat site, click on Frequencies/Europe/70°-0°E and choose a
satellite. There must be something there for you :))

Nearly all of the Astra/Eurobird 28 E FTA channels are available to a
Sky box, I think, even they have to be hand-tuned. The Lidl set is cheaper
than the inferior basic Sky set, AFAICT.

If you're willing to go wandering around the sky, try to get:
mbc2 on Arabsat at 26 E,
TV5 on Astra 19 E or Hotbird 13 E,
Eurosport and DSF on Astra 19 E,
Top Channel on Eutelsat 16 E,
RAI Sport Sat on Hotbird 13 E

I'm willing to take your word for it
that these stations have interesting programs.
However, I'm not really sufficiently converted
to want to go up on my roof with a statellite finder
in the middle of the night to see the next episode of ... what?

I think I'll stay with Mr Murdoch,
who after all needs my pennies.

Interesting depends on what you like. Me, I like French films, cycling
and winter sports, all of which have practically died out on UK TV.
Schedules are online at sites like http://www.tvtv.fr/
http://www.infosat.tv/ and the station's own sites (via lyngsat.com)

Oh, me neither. Fit a small motor if you want to wander regularly
and easily.

Well, there's no reasoning with a Sun reader.

I read an interesting article today: apparently there are 7.3mil UK Sky
subscribers, but also 0.7m other satellite system owners. I wonder how
many are ex-subscribers and how many bought standard systems.
