My HD-FOX T2 did its OTA software update and I can now record to an external
hard disc. However, the HDMI output is now completely unusable. My Samsung
telly recognises it as a valid 1080i/25 signal but the content is a screen
full of noise. The analogue SD output is unaffected. I tried the usual:
unplugging from the mains for five minutes; doing a factory reset. Neither
made any difference.

I rang the Humax consumer helpline and the man I spoke with didn't seem at
all surprised and he even commented that there was a known handshaking
problem with the HDMI component of the new software. He asked for my e-mail
address and said he'd send me a link to allow me to downgrade my software in
order to make the HDMI output usable again. I asked if I'd lose the ability
to record and he confirmed that I would, but at least I'd be able to watch
in HD again.

I didn't receive an e-mail (giving him the benefit of the doubt, I suspect
he spelt it incorrectly) but I found an earlier version than 1.01.12 by
googling. However, I haven't found the time to install it yet. Perhaps I'll
just wait for the next OTA update.

Is anyone else having this problem or is it specific to Samsung? I
was thinking about the Humax HD PVR, but I'll wait if there are
software issues.

Freeview or Freesat ?

The OP was using the Fox T2 Freeview box.

Very slightly on topic, but my Foxsat HDR seemed to record BBC1 HD without
encryption tonight, unlike with BBC HD.

I haven't tried playing the recording on anything else, but is BBC1 HD not
encrypted like BBC HD?

I'll try that this evening and report back. I'll have to unplug the SCART
connection first because a signal on the SCART input of the TV seems to
override everything.

Ian, is your TV a Samsung too?

Well, I tried it and what I saw was the Humax start-up screen, but with
white letters on a pink background, offset to the right slightly with about
3cm of black down the left hand side. Once it had booted the screen went
black for a few seconds and then the noise appeared as, presumably, the FOX
started outputting channel 50, to which I had left it tuned when I last put
it in standby.

When I re-made the SCART connection and selected it on the TV I was able to
view BBC One HD in down-converted SD glory!
