If the whole chain is closing I feel really guilty for pressing them so hard
for a 1p OnDigital box ... ;-)
My local Tandy (Cannock,Staffs) closed down a couple of weeks ago and is now
reopening as a Carphone Warehouse who I think are part of the same company.

The head office (Leamore, Walsall) is also closing down and being replaced
by a carphone warehouse.

Don't be such a fool to yourself. Do you honestly think that an
organisation like Tandy would be brought down by a few hundred
(perhaps) people wanting a box for 1p (and totally entitled to it) ?
Tandy have been (start soundtrack: Simon & Garfunkle "Bridge
Over Troubled Waters) going sour for ages.
In January 1998 the BBC Reported that...
The electrical retailer Tandy is to close 69 of its UK stores with the loss of
around 230 jobs.
The US-owned chain said the loss-making stores were being closed in a
"restructuring programme."
Managing Director, Andrew Fryatt, said even after the closures, the chain of
269 remaining stores would be the second-largest high street electrical retail
chain in the UK.
The move is to protect the profitability of its remaining stores, which employ
around 1,600 people.
Mr Fryatt said a substantial amount of money had been invested in the chain in
the past two years.
He blamed changes in the retail environment for the ongoing loss-making of the
69 stores selected for closure.
"We have tried a number of actions to improve the performance of these stores,
but have been forced to conclude that there is no prospect of a return to
profitability in these locations.
"The difficult decision to close them has therefore been taken to improve the
underlying financial health of the company," said Mr Fryatt.
He said the affected staff would be offered alternative positions wherever
possible.
They are franchised AFAIK, but they should be shut down because they employ
completely clueless staff. Go to Maplins instead. At least they know what
they're talking about.

I wouldn't worry about pressing Tandy for your money's worth. Charles
Dunstone is SERIOUSLY rich! Go for it!
Over and Out!
Hyper
I quite agree
When I was a lad, most of my pocket money went to Tandy's, then I discovered
Maplin Mail order, and it was the middle finger to Tandy's from thereon.
I have kept every single catalogue since 1985!
The older catalogues are a mine of info, they used to do "Its a Fact"
sectionson things like resistor colour codes, scart pin connections etc

Carphone Warehouse bought Tandy last year. Some of the shops are staying
as they were, but those in areas where CPW have no outlet are being
converted to phone shops only.

Pretty inevitable I'd have thought. Once Carphone Warehouse bought them
and removed most of the reasons to wander in...
No, I didn't honestly think that. Tongue was firmly within cheek.
Sorry Chris, I didn't want you to feel bad - it was me who pointed
it out in the first place.

Tandy in Ipswich changed to a Carphone Warehouse. Now there are 2
Carphone Warehouses and no Tandys. (A couple of years agom there were 2
Tandys and no Carphone Warehouses - a much better situation.). At least
Marshion is still open.

I hope people aren't mourning the loss of Tandy ! Obviously, it's sad if a
company merges or is taken over and this results in some people loosing their
immediate employment, but sometimes this is also a good opportunity for
some people to move on to better things. Tandy was a good in its day,
but there were always better then, and there are better now. There's
Maplin for one (but just recently they've not had some items in stock for
a long time - 6 weeks !), and then there's Electromail - the private buyers
arm of R.S.Components.

Have they any plans to serve Joe Public in there depots?

As far as I know RS Components will only ever deal with
customers who are intending to spend a certain amount per
year. When I opened an account for a company I worked for
about 10 years ago they expected us to buy £1000 of items
per year. Electromail - I don't think there's any limit. BUT,
I was actually looking at the rs site today to see if I could get
an Electromail catalogue - it used to be different - a cut down
version - but I could find it.
Seems a bit of a silly system but it works - I think RS ought to be a bit
more relaxed about cash sales to private buyers.

For private buyers, I find CPC is one of the best, no RC cars, no kits just
electronic bits and bobs, they sell VCR and TV spares, right through to
micro-processors. They take all major CC's and deliver promptly. see
www.cpc.co.uk Their electronic cat is down at the moment btw. (no
connection, just a satisfied customer).
Drew.
No. Don't forget that Dixons and Currys are owned by the same company,
which leaves precious few competitors...

gone...
