Looks a bit sad when you compare with the availability on the Sky £75 one
off package free satellite.
I'm puzzled why these new boxes for FreeSat do not get all the FTA stations
at 28deg E position. Have they been made not to?
If so Sky free still looking best.

It's most probably because the missing channels are unwilling to pay for
EPG inclusion on BBC Freesat.
Interesting that CNN are missing, and all the UK commercial radio
stations. There's no Sky News, not sure whether to be surprised by that
or not.
No mention of C4-HD or the promised ITV-HD.
: It's most probably because the missing channels are unwilling to pay for
: EPG inclusion on BBC Freesat.
Yes! - the Freesat EPG cost was quite high (about half of what Sky charge).

: or not.
Sky News normally turns up most places! The MORE interesting fact is that
the (few) Freesat STBs which have been sold in error (mostly by Comet) do
*NOT* have any manual tuning ability to add channels not in the EPG.
Presumably this will get corrected!
: No mention of C4-HD or the promised ITV-HD.
C4HD is currently uplinked by Sky on a Sky transponder (which is not
carrying any Freesat SI data) - as well as being encrypted - so probably
cannot be included at this stage.
The lack of any sign of ITV-HD having an OFCOM licence or any testing has
been causing much head scratching. Some Freesat web-pages being designed
"online" were spotted yesterday which said that ITV-HD would initially be
available via "red button" functionality - not as a channel!
I saw that too. Not sure how you'd schedule a "red button" recording...Can
anyone explain why such a bizarre kludge might be used? To avoid the need
for an OFCOM licence? Did someone just forget to apply for one or are they
trying to save money?
In any case, I'm not interested in Freesat until there's a PVR, at which
point I become very interested indeed, mostly for HD. I hope all the quirks
are ironed out by then!
Certainly on Sky you cannot schedule recording of "red-butto" content.
People have been scouring the Ofcom licence lists and it certainly seems that
ITV have *not* applied for one for ITV-HD!
This "red-button" kludge is, presumably, only going to be temporary and
may indicate that they have hardly any HD-content! It also saves them (or
gives them time to find!!) the bandwidth needed for a full-time ITV-HD as
well. C4HD is currently about 90% upscaled SD for example.
No commercial radio stations, they must want us to buy DAB sets instead!
Any news on FIVE maybe joining Freesat?
It's about ten times the number of channels I currently get from Mux 1 on
the odd days when I can get anything at all. Admittedly, there are few
channels outside of Mux 1 I'll ever have any use for :o)
(kim)
Yes, it's a bit light, but at least Freesat will get the idea that there
are free satellite channels out to the public. And if this forces Sky to
promote Freesat-from-Sky a bit more aggressively to compete, then so much
the better.

A Freeview channel is *VERY* expensive AFAIR - due to effectively paying
towards the transmission costs at multiple sites - but that vast cost
may include the EPG!!
All Freesat is providing is the EPG (channels arrange uplink and transponder rental )themselves) - but their EPG is costing ~£30000/yesr.

I bought a cheap satellite kit from Lidl that gets loads of free channels.
Added a rotator and got lots more.
Of course not everything that's on FreeView is there - but there are some
English language ones which ain't on FreeView.
So basically those of us with long memories don't have to go anywhere near

To e-mail, change noise into sound.
On satellite ITV1 is not just one channel, it is more like 30. So it would
make sense for ITV to broadcast one extra HD stream and have the STBs switch
back to SD for the advert breaks, local news etc.
You might be able to record the HD stream directly by manually adding the
channel to a favourites list using the transponder parameters, however you
then possibly would not get the programme schedule, which is desirable for
scheduling a recording.
The BBC have a similar problem if they want to broadcast BBC1 in HD. It
would make sense for a PVR to either give the user the option of choosing HD
or SD, or to always record HD if available.

The only real advantage of a BBC Freesat box, over a bog standard Lidl style
solution is the 7 day EPG, which is the only method for a viable D-Sat FTA PVR.
Sky's PVR requires a subscription of course.
Perhaps if the UK broadcasters had shown more interest when the DVB-S spec was
being produced, and pushed for some decent EPG facilities, maybe we wouldn't
have the situation now of two propriety UK D-Sat platforms, identical in
functionality, but totally incompatible with each other or anything else.

Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply.
I need the EPG to set the channel on the STB so my DVD machine can record it
as well. I can set the time on the latter but not the channel.

The clue is in the first four characters of the name.
You mean like in Freeview?
How is not providing optional CAM slots in the receivers going to destroy
Murdoch's unholy monopoly?
It's a total waste of money buying a Freesat receiver when you can get more
channels on Freesat from Sky or any standard European satellite receiver.
Yes, apart from the free2play games channel that existed for a while,
what is on freeview (not just DVB-T) that is Pay TV or PPV?

Did I say it was going to?

Perhaps, the one thing they could have an advantage on is HD with no
subscription, shame HD PVRs won't be available for some time.
It does depend how may of the extra (or missing) channels you consider
are "dross".

Playboy TV is the closest you'll get to porn
Steve Terry
Freesat as in BBC and ITV's Freesat ( www.freesat.co.uk ) -- and they
licence STB makers to use the Freesat brand. Maybe this licence forbids
the branded STBs from receiving free-to-air channels that are not in the
Freesat EPG. That's what I was querying. Understand now?

One indication that this is not quite the complete launch lineup is that
it doesn't list ITV HD, and yet according to DigitalSpy, test
transmissions of that channel have started on Eurobird-1 with a service
ID of 10510, and that ID has been confirmed as present in pre-launch
Freesat EPG data. One oddity is that the "H.222" codec is being used for
test transmissions of ITV HD at the moment. Should that be H.262?
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/a95131/itv-hd-to-be-freesat-exclusive.html
A new version of Freesat's website was briefly online earlier this week which
stated "ITVHD will be available via red-button functionality) - so it is
*NOT* going to have an EPG entry at all (at least not at first).
and that ID has been confirmed as present in pre-launch
: Freesat EPG data. One oddity is that the "H.222" codec is being used for
: test transmissions of ITV HD at the moment. Should that be H.262?
This ITV test transmission is proving almost impossible to receive - even
with fully featured FTA receivers! It's mostly only the most flexible
DVB-S PC software which can tune into it. This is fuelling the suspicion
that ITVHD is going to have some "exclusive" period ot time on Freesat *ONLY*!
> Freesat EPG data. One oddity is that the "H.222" codec is being used for
> test transmissions of ITV HD at the moment. Should that be H.262?
I hadn't heard of H.222 until it was mentioned on DS, but it isn't a
codec, it's a format for transport streams.
Isn't this is the source of the speculation that ITV are *deliberately*
labelling their H.264 stream incorrectly to prevent even FTA satellite
receivers from being able to tune into it!
If you follow the digital spy forum it would appear to be down to
interpretation of the specifications.
The Humax box lets you add channels.
