Just done a Freeview auto-tune here near Lymington, Hants, and was
suprised to find that BBC1 was no longer 101, but 1. (BBC2= 2, etc).

("101 Not available...")

Yet the Radio Rimes shows the former 101, 102,etc.

Anyone knnow what's going on?

Should have been (before and after retune)

1 = BBC1 SD
2 = BBC2 SD
101= BBC1 HD
102= BBC2 HD
etc

Have you got lots of duplicate channels above 800? Maybe your set found
a distant transmitter first ...

This is also what happens if you retune a set which doesn't have an HD
tuner.

Our older plasma set (a Toshiba which occupies a strange middle ground
between 720p and 1080p and fiddles stuff to get an HDish picture) only has
an SD tuner so I have seen this effect as well.

Cheers

Aha - now I understand! The TV's Freeview tuner is SD only,
but the Radio Times shows only the HD channel numbers...

(Our normal use is Humax with twin HD tuners, but use the TV's tuner if
we
happen to be recording 2 channels simultaneously on the Humax and want to
watch a 3rd channel.)

No, Radio Times shows the Sky, Freesat, and Freeview numbers.

BBC 1 SD on Sky and Freesat has always been 101.

Not now.

Freesat:
101 BBC One HD
102 BBC Two (SD)
103 ITV (SD)
104 Channel 4 (SD)
105 Channel 5 HD
106 BBC Two HD
107 BBC Four HD
108 BBC One (SD)
110 BBC Four (SD)
111 ITV HD

(I've omitted the regional identifiers from those channel names.)

It's mapped according to the receiver, and location.

In Wales, Scotland, and NI where BBC 1 HD is the same 'regional'
version as BBC 1 SD, then on HD boxes the HD version appears on 101, and
on SD boxes the SD version appears on 101.

In England, where only the BBC 1 HD England version is available, then
the HD version is 106, the regional SD version is 101

Same for C5 HD nationwide, and you can no longer see the SD version if
you have an HD box

I copied this channel list off the TV screen. The region is Northern
Ireland.
I've just changed the postcode on my Freesat tuner to a Manchester
postcode and rescanned. That gives what you describe.

If you try to record a C5 program on a Humax Freesat box it gives the
usual choice of HD or SD, the SD version is on C5+1, one hour later than
the HD.

Umm... C5 HD wasn't available on Freesat until May this year.

Look at the bottom of each page, although for BBC 1, 2, ITV 1, and C4
the Freeview SD numbers are not shown, presumably because it's implicit
that they are 1,2,3,4

Given that Radio Times list the channel numbers in the column heading for
each channel, it would be very easy for them also to include 1, 2, 3, 4 for
BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 and CH4 - in the same way that they do for BBC Four (9),
Channel 5 (5), ITV2 (6), ITV3 (10) etc.

But right back from the days of analogue TV, it has been the convention that
TV tuners have been tuned to button1=BBC1, button2=BBC2 etc so maybe there
is an assumption that "everyone" knows about those channel numbers.

So I think it's fair to say that all channels which have listings in Radio
Times have the channel number listed, either in the column heading (for SD)
or at the foot of the column (for HD and/or +1 versions of the channel) -
apart from the Big 4 channels mentioned above.

At least Freeview uses sensible numbers for the HD variants of the Big 4 (ie
101, 102, 103 and 104), unlike Sky which seems to have a very unintuitive
numbering system.

Oh, for goodness sake, those four channels have had those de facto
positions for decades. Where did you imagine they were ?
