A 'Freeview' receiver will not receive HD. The terrestrial HD test
transmissions can only be received with a special receiver supplied to the
people selected to do the evaluation.
Can any of the current so called HD Ready TVs with digital terrestrial tuners
receive and display these HD broadcasts? Quite perverse and misleading really.
To receive and display HD your set needs to be able to decode MPEG-4.

The "HD Ready" part of your TV applies to using external an HD source
(HD-DVD/BluRay/PC/Sky-HD etc) feed to it, not that it is ready to
receive HD Freeview (test) transmissions.

Well, I suppose it is *receiving* the signal, but incapable of
*decoding* it.
>Ok, I have an LG LCD 32inch HD ready TV with built in freeview,

More of a complete misunderstanding.

Not at all. At no point have I or anyone I know been under the impression
that a standard DVB tuner could decode HD broadcasts.....even if
incorporated into a 'HD Ready' set. Nor have I been under the impression
that the trial was for anyone other than the carefully screened and selected
[lucky] four hundred and odd trialists. A HD Ready TV is just
that....'ready' and waiting. A standard Freeview tuner, be it in a
standalone box or in a TV, is marketed for the service we have now.
To the OP, if you really want to see what your TV can do as regards HD....go
with Sky for TV, wait for HD DVD/Blu-Ray for movies, or even try an
upscaling capable HDMI equipped Freeview box (often found incorporated mid
to high end Freeview HDD/DVD recorders....like the Panasonic DMR-EX75 for
example....that is supposed to be somewhere between SD and HD).
The display upscales anyway. No particular reason to suppose a fairly cheap
machine will make a better job of it.
Of course, yeah, depends on the chip in the telly vs the chip in the
machine. In my case, the Panasonic's chip (HDD/DVD [HDMI] recorder) is
better than the relatively budget TV's chip (it is for my bedroom only,
see).
