I recently bought a Manhattan Plaza HDT-700 high definition STB.
http://www.manhattan-receivers.com/index.php/products/freeview_receivers/plaza_hdt-700/
The picture is excellent but the box keeps on going off. I used it as a
source to record to a VCR and twice it turned off before getting to the
end of a one hour programme leaving the VCR recording a blank picture.
Yesterday I tried it to record four hours of Wimbledon. I got 2 hours 54
minutes of tennis and the rest of the tape blank.
Since then I have been turning the box on to see how long it stayed
alive and the maximum has been around three hours.
I contacted the makers whose first reply was Please confirm the SCART
connection between your VCR and the HDT-700. Is it connected to the VCR
SCART on the HDT-700?
Now waiting for another reply from them. Looks as though I will be
asking Amazon for a replacement or refund.
A friend in Scotland who had a new STB from Digital UK told me that her
box goes off after about three hours.
Anyone here heard of a similar problem?

Most new stbs have eco timers. They switch off after 3 hours from the
last time a button was pressed.
This is normally a menu setting that needs to be set to permanently
stay on.

Will look at set up options later but manual makes no mention of such a
function.

My grundig smart talk does this. It seems that there is an auto standby
after no activity timer one can set, but I keep turning it off and hey
presto some days later its back on again. I've been told in this case its
probably a bad wall wart that is chucking out crud and resetting the
software as I notice other funnies like no signal untill i do a reset or
audio descrption defaulting to off.

I hate switch mode power supplies... grr.

There is not a menu setting to disable. There is no way that I can use
it as a source to record from if I am going out and want the recording
to start a few hours later.
We also have a Toshiba HDD & DVD/ VCR. I can programme that to record to
HD or DVD but it does not allow me to programme the VCR to record.

This is from the manual for the set you list.
The answer to the off is as we all said.

I Hope this is of use.

RECORDING FREESAT PROGRAMMES
You can record a programme by connecting a VCR or DVD recorder
to the VCR SCART socket on the back of the Plaza HD•S. You will
need to choose the recorder’s SCART input for recording (see your
recorder’s manual for guidance).
You can also record a programme even when you are not at home.
Highlight the programme in the programme guide list, make a
note of its scheduled date and times, and set a reminder with the
button. Then set the recorder’s event timer to record from its
SCART input on the date and times noted.

also AUTO STANDBY
To conserve power, the Plaza HD•S will switch to standby after
three hours if no buttons are pressed on the remote control or
front panel. The Auto standby function is normally turned on, and
can be turn off by pressing the button.
SLEEP TIMER
Press to show the sleep timer menu and use the and buttons
to choose a time up to 90 minutes after which the receiver automatically
switches itself to standby. Press to confirm your choice.
AUTO TURN ON
You can set the Plaza HD•S to switch on automatically at a
particular time. Press to show the auto turn on menu and use
the or buttons to set the timer to turn the receiver on once,
every day, each week, on weekdays, weekends, or particular days
of the week. Then use the and buttons, along with the ,
and the number buttons to set the switch-on time, the channel
source (freesat TV or radio), the channel number and the sound
volume. Press to confirm.
AUTO TURN OFF
You can set the receiver to switch off automatically at a particular
time. Press to show the auto turn off menu and use the
or buttons to set the timer to turn the receiver off once, every
day, each week, on weekdays, weekends, or particular days of the
week. Then use the and buttons, along with the , and
number buttons to set the switch-off time. Press to confirm.

My one is the Manhattan Plaza HDT-700 high definition STB not the
Freesat version.

Sorry I went for the one that your link sent me to. I will have a look
for you.

Ok I have done some more reserch.

I can only find the freeview box on the Manhattan site.

Your Link on this original posting is to the Plaza HDT-700 freeview
box. Is says so in the link you set up.

The Manhatten site only has a freeview version of the Plaza HDT-700 listed.

The box you have is therefore totally different to the one you have
asked about?

Is the one you have a Satellite box or a DVB from a normal aerial?

you say you got it from Amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Freeview-HD-Manhattan-Plaza-HDT700/dp/B003R01EU0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341220786&sr=8-1
is the onlu one I can find.

That is the same box and it is Freeview.

Even if it is not exactly the same then the thing will probably still
have the same function. Try looking in the manual that came with it as
obviously the official one I got from the Manhattan site is of no use to
you.

It is The Plaza HDT 700 High definition digital Freeview set top box
that I have and that is what my link takes me to as does the Amazon
link. The manual gives no way to avoid it going into stand by. Manhattan
seem to want to play stupid. I have written to Amazon asking them to
take it back as unsatisfactory even though I am past their normal 30 day
limit.
My intention then will be to buy a Humax HD-Fox T2.

You are quite correct. The manual for this model is quite stupid and
very simple. It dose not even mention standby.

The only thing you might try is to use a full scart and see if that will
trigger the box to stay awake. Otherwise it is as you say no use to you.

Good luck

Gary

As always with Amazon no problem to return unsatisfactory item.

"Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk
First of all, please allow me to apologise for the issue you have
experienced with this item " Freeview HD Manhattan Plaza HDT700 ". We
certainly did not intend for this to happen. I once again apologize for
the disappointment caused.
Therefore, I request you to please return the "Freeview HD Manhattan
Plaza HDT700 " to us and we'll refund you as soon as possible."

Sounds like a result. I wonder why the confusion. On the Manhattan web
site they list the start guide twice but no full user guide for this
particular model.
and the links are not accurate.
Cheers

Yes, but only briefly.
I rapidly found there was a user-settable time-out on my HD sat box
(Comag SL40HD) which defaulted to 3 hours, iirc. I soon set that to
'never'.

Have you tried that? Mine will start up from standby and just do the
recording then turn itself off.

My Manhattan Plaza HDT-700 did not have that option. It has now gone back
to the supplier. Manhattan evidently did not want to engage in
conversation on the topic.

Same here, with a Morrison's cheapo unit. But it didn't always tune to
the right channel, so it's just a spare STB now.
The auto standby was correctly described in the user manual, as
complying with some EU Directive, is only two hours long, and is not
programmable, so watching a three-hour program needs a sudden scramble
for the remote control. Another reason to keep it as a spare.
