My Dad's looking to get a freeview box and i've seen that from Monday (7th
March) this Goodmans STB is only £39.99 from Richer Sounds:

http://ws4.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=GOOD-GDB3-FREEVIEW

Anyone have any experience with this STB, as it seems very good value for
money to me? Or should I get him the Sagem ITD58 which is £10 less?

I haven't had any problems with the GDB3 (apart from the peculiarity that it
gets the right and left channels the wrong way round).

I'm very pleased with my GDB3. I hadn't seen this colour scheme
before - I don't know if it indicates any difference from the 'normal'
silver one. If you get one, check what software version it has, and,
if necessary, download v.4.1 from http://gdb.freddys-utilities.co.uk/.

Picture is of a GDB4 that's why you've not seen it before ;-)

Ah ...

Then all bets are off. But GDB*3*s are, IMHO, a good thing, once
updated to v.4.1.

What is in V.4.1 that isn't in V.4.0?

When is V.4.1 likely to be available through over air download?

Sorry - "Don't know" to both. But what's the problem about updating
from a website? That's not a rhetorical question - I can imagine a
number of possible answers, but none of them seems to me to be
insurmountable.

Whatever they are, I wouldn't bother to surmount them unless I could see a
clear advantage in the upgrade and it wasn't going to be available over air
(for example if I had missed the OAD).

I get the impression that the website only versions are (effectively) beta
test versions for enthusiasts.

How long should the wait be for the auto-detect occur ?

V4.1 gives a 7 day epg instead of just now and next. I have two GDB3s which
I am very pleased with, but I have reverted to V4.0 (actually 3.11 as no V4
appears to be available for download) as there are a few minor niggles in
V4.1 which to me means I would rather not have the 7 day EPG.
I will wait for the over the air download before I update again. This was
rumoured to have a slot in March, but these things change.

What are the niggles for you, John? I haven't found any problems.

Depends on what you mean! It's a straight-through cable (i.e. *not* a
"null-modem" cable) with a 9-pin male D-connector at one end to plug
into the GDB3 and whatever is needed at the other end to plug into the
RS232 on your computer.

No wait to speak of at all. Press the reset button on the back of the
GDB3 when the cable is connected and hyperterminal is running and the
hyperterminal box shows some characters (which I can't remember) which
show that connection has been established. It's all in the
instructions on the website.

Not to detract from your appreciation of the Asda machine, and I'm not
an expert, but AFAICS the GDB3 has all the features you mention, plus at
least a couple - channel lock and favourites - which you don't. I'm
happy with mine.

The box fails to come out of standby sometimes (even though I have switched
off auto update which was alleged to fix it).
The sound gives a glitch around every half hour, usually when the BBC1 are
playing their idents.

These together are only niggles, but enough to make me downgrade, as I
wasn't using the 7 day EPG as much as I thought I would.

Thanks. I keep mine on all the time, so I haven't noticed your first
problem (though I have auto-update off as well; I reckon I will know
when updates are due and look for them manually, so keeping
auto-update off avoids the possibility of recordings in the wee small
hours being interrupted).

Your second problem is interesting. I regularly notice sound drop-outs
during BBC4 idents, but they are not like the 'normal' audio/video
break-ups. I had assumed they were a BBC switching problem, and, as
far as I can remember, they have been present throughout all software
versions. Are you saying they go away with v.3.11?

I had a hunch about the sound drop-outs during BBC idents, and it seems
to be correct.

While the idents are playing, the Now and Next updates, and interrupts
the audio.

Is that feasible?

Am I missing something here?

The line (I will highlight the main points); "I'm not an expert, but AFAIC
the GDB3 has all the features you mention, *plus at least a couple - channel
lock and favourites* - *which you don't*".

Is this not saying that I, or rather the Asda Pacific, does *not* have a
channel lock function and the ability to set favourites??? [which it does].
It reads that way to me. I apologise if I've missed some underlying meaning,
and would ask you to make it clearer to me if I have. Thanks.

Regards.
