Martin - is this meant to be a response to my enquiry of a week or two
ago about our Wharfedale humming in the middle of the night? (and waking
me up because it does it randomly, and even a slight hum wakes a light
sleeper in ambient dead silence).

If so, I have more to report:

1. I was always aware that PVRs hum, when the disk fires up, and indeed
the hum is barely noticeable (except in circs above), and can be
alleviated by pads under the feet of the machine.

2. It was (is?) indeed a random event, _not_ a permanent hum.

3. Following a mention here of software updating (on the Wharfedale, at
0300 hours every day, as described in its manual), I went into the menus
and switched OFF "Automatic Software Update".

4. It doesn't seem to have done it since. I hadn't reported here yet,
because I still don't know if it actually has stopped yet: I haven't
_noticed_ it since I made the change, which is not the same thing. And I
didn't want to tempt fate (now I've done it).

5. I firmly believe that our particular machine is liable to get
hysterical, switching itself on/off/into limbo, if you stretch its
limited intellect. I also firmly believe (now) that the daily 0300
software update had this effect, which resulted in random disk fire-ups
after the 0300 "update search" (there hasn't been an update for over 3
years by the way, so a daily check is otiose).

That's the story - so far. And If your post wasn't a response to my
problem, my apologies!

IIRC early versions of the PVR9300T firmware ran the fan at full
speed. Later versions vary the speed so the box is much quieter.

My Marantz CD player makes a humming sound even when its not spinning
discs. The is because the Mains transformer is bloody noisy!
