I have an on Dodgy box (Philips) and live in Basingstoke, Hants. Quick
question - I'm rerigging my roof aerial and want to know what transmitter to
point at. Do I go for Hannington (NW?) or the other one - Midhurst?
I thought that the signal from Hannington was stronger in Basingstoke, but
many of my neighbours have big aerials pointing at Midhurst!
Which is the strongest signal to this area?
Thanks
Alan
hannington is visible from many areas around Basingstoke. it is
possible that you are too close perhaps? can you see the mast?
Thanks for your quick reply!
Today I was on the roof - have to say that I've never been more worried in
my life !!
Anyway, I rigged the aerial successfully, but noticed whilst up there that
about 75% of the houses are pointing at Midhurst (east?) and only 25% are
pointing at Hannington. Also noticed that the ones pointing to Hannington
are much smaller than those pointing at Midhurst.
My aerial is a large and ugly high-gain wideband, but moving it from the
loft to the rooftop has made virtually no difference! The signal strength
meter on my Philips xx71 decoder shows Green 3, which was almost the same as
the loft location.
I still get occasional clicks and blocks, and unfortunately, MUX D (which
carries MTV etc) is still not available. Oddly enough, I did manage to get
it for a while with an aerial booster and loft aerial combination!
Any ideas?
Cheers
Alan

are you sure those pointing east aren't actually pointing at Crystal
Palace. my borther in law used to have two aerials - one for Meridian
(Hannington) and one for Carlton (Crystal Palace) and he lived in
Sherfield.
i thought that Midhurst would be SE from where you are.
I can't see the mast, although when I was on the roof, I wasn't actually
looking for it (silly, I know!) But I fancy that you might be right, I could
indeed be too close to it!
Not sure what else to try ! :(
Cheers

ISTR reading somehwere that the digital broadcasts from
Hannington are "steered" in a Northerly direction, to stop
interference with TV stations to the South.
Analog broadcasts are, I think, omni-directional.
Anybody know any different?
MH
So Crystal Palace or Midhurst will be his best bet.
I concur with this - Muxes from Hannington are restricted to the south &
east because of interference risk to Guildford analogue & several
continental transmitters.
So a high gain Group A aerial pointed at Crystal Palace might be worth
trying.
I will try Mashers next !!

Alan
The null ( as stated) towards the east from Hannington DTV, is deepest
in the Chineham area of Basingstoke , as you move towards the town centre
(thru Oakridge and Popley) signals increase again. In Brighton Hill,
Hatch Warren, and Kempshott levels are fine, and
'bang in' with no problem.
At my girlfriends house in Brighton Hill, all 6 muxes come in at 3-Green,
using a 'B+Q' cheap and nasty 10 element wideband, 10 feet above the
ground, pointing through a thick laurel bush, and across a main road.
I have yet to witness any break up of picture on her set up.
FYI , Analogue BBC1/2, ITV, and C4 from Hannington are omni-directional.
C5 transmits only in a northerly direction, to serve Reading and Newbury.
It cannot transmit in a southerly direction because of French
frequency planning considerations. Some signal however does 'leak' south,
and a watchable picture can be obtained in parts of Chineham, and Popley.
Hope this helps.
I'm in the Brighton Hill area - using an Antiference high-gain wideband
aerial on the roof!!
I can only get 3 Green on MUX's 43 and 46 from hannington. The rest are low
or non existent.
Might try a conventional aerial, just for the hell of it!

Alan
