Just seen an advert on TV for a new range of Panasonic TV sets claiming sets
can receive HD TV.
Is it Freesat they mean? (ie built in)
What about the coming terrestrial HD?

My impression was yes but will "small print" somewhere say with a box added?

Your impression was wrong, don't expect a TV that can receive terrestrial HD
for about a year.

Yes it is!

Will need a STB. These sets only have a Freesat tuner.

No, they have a freeview tuner and an analogue tuner too, but not a
freeview HD tuner.

I think I know the ad you mean, and it certainly gave me the impression that
the TVs were capable of receiving HD 'out of the box'. Next time it is on,
I'll pay more attention...

Apparently I mis-remembered, they *don't* have a freeview tuner, sorry

So what would you be able to receive with a Pioneer KRP-600A:

http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products/62/63/413/KRP-600A/index.html

It clearly has digital tuners for terrestrial and satellite, and some
ablility to handle HD but no claims to support either Freeview or Freesat.

I haven't found such small print, but the specifications say what it will do,
and this does not include terrestrial HD:

Receiving System
PAL -I yes
DVB yes
DVB-S HD (H.264, FreeSat) yes

So no DVB-s2 tuner? That is immediate inbuilt obsolescence.

Freesat HD receiver specs. requires a DVB-S2 tuner,
but it is currently not used AFAIK - this will very likely
change.

Lars :)

From the downloaded user-manual page 67.
"DVB-S / S2 ( freesat Other Sat.) : freesat services via Satellite
dish input"

they get freesat - not terrestrial hd.
of course if you have a satellite dish and tv with integrated satellite
tuner - hd and all, there's not much attraction to terrestrial hd - i'd bet
it will be a lower bitrate than the satellite offering.

Yeah, well I though MarkyP said they had a DVB-T tuner, then the website
seems to say they don't and the PDF of the manual only says a "DVB
Tuner" which could mean the DVB-S tuner for freesat, or it could mean a
DVB-T tuner after all ...

There is a lot of confusion, what a surprise. I can recall an ad apparently
selling a tv as hd, when pressed it appears they mean it works with blueray
and hd camcorders.

Brand new PC World opened today I asked to see this range of Panasonic that
would receive HD without adding a box, they being the only maker. They did
not have such a thing all TVs the same in being HD Ready I was told. 6
members of staff said it.
The situation is hopeless.

Not quite true, since german TV manufacturers like Loewe, Metz and
Technisat have HD sets with DVB-S2 tuners built in...
