My UExxF5xxx series TV updates over WiFi/Ethernet rather than OTA, I
don't know if that means all Samsung F5 series do?

the page I have linked is:

http://dtg.org.uk/dtg/download_schedule.html

I note that it is rather sparsely populated ATM

Haven't been there for ages so can't say when it last had an exhaustive list

Does the TV have a USB port as most do these days?

If so, a search for Samsung UE42F5000 firmware update or similar will
lead you to:
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/UE42F5000AKXXU
where you can download the appropriate firmware and load it onto the TV
via USB.
Which would probably explain why OTA update was switched off and why
there are so few updates scheduled.

Information is available from DTG via an RSS feed.

There were 47 downloads on Freesat and Freeview during 2015.

The DTG webpage for OTA downloads doesn't appear to be "well
maintained".

At the rate they're disabling the [unused] smart features, soon the only
smart feature left will be catchup iPlaye/All4/ITVplayer etc, which is
probably all people want ...

In that case when you inherit your Mum's old TV use it like the old one
- as a dumb screen, fronted by the Hummy.
