Have a 50" LG Smart TV which plays video files from a USB pen drive, problem
is there doesn't seem to be a way to disconnect it before removing it like
"safely remove hardware" in Windows. When I do this and put it in PC it
tells me there's errors on it and insists on scanning it although no errors
are found. There was no printed user manual with this TV, it's onscreen,
but I can't see anything about this.
Related question, I also have to remove it from TV and connect to PC to
delete files, can it be done from the TV?

This is a standard feature of some versions of Windows. It doesn't know
there are errors, it just assumes that there might be. If you skip the
scan, it almost certainly will use it OK.

There won't be. It is a feature of Windows, not your LG TV

If your LG is anythinglike my LG, it uses a different native format for
recording to USB devices, which means it has to be formatted and then
written to on the TV for the TV to be able to modify the files.
Otherwise it can only read them.

Thanks for the reply, the TV reads OK from a pen drive or external HDD
formatted in Windows. For recording have to use a dedicated pen drive which
the TV formats in a form of Linux. I know that because I tried to take
recordings off it, found software to let Windows "see" it but couldn't
convert the recordings to a usable file type.

That appears to be the standard way from wha t I hear.
However Its been a while but I do remember disabling caching on the
computer so one wrote directly to the ram stick and had no issues about safe
removal from the computer any more as all files were written in real time.
Not sure why, on modern machines, why one would need to do anything other
than just copy the files.

That's terrible. LG User Smart TV Manuals only tell you how to connect
them up, nothing about operation. If you can't find what you want on
the on-screen menus then you're stuffed.

Whether there is likely to be any on stick confusion will depend on whether there is active writing going on when you pull it out.

Do not remove the drive when formatting it or when recording. Ideally, only remove the drive when the TV is off or in standby.

That means that the USB drive's filesystem "dirty bit" is set, which
should normally only happen if there were outstanding changes that
hadn't been written to the drive before it was removed. If no
inconsistency is ever found, then maybe the TV's USB handling is a bit
duff.

What do you mean by "formats in a form of Linux"? Linux is an OS, not a
filing system. Do you mean the TV formats devices as ext3, ext4, or
similar?

FWIW My Panasonic Video DVD recorders make DVD RW's with no 'owner'. Not
sure if this is a deliberate ploy to get in the way of reading on Linux
systems, or simply cluelessness. Can't comment on file systems, etc, for
Windows.

What does ffmpeg/ffprobe make of such recordings?

FWIW Here my Panasonic TV will access memory sticks formatted with the
common Microsoft 'FAT' arrangements. It also allows me to dismount them.
But I think it also dismounts automatically when 'switched off' (i.e. put
into standby). I'd hope any sensible 'smart' TV would do that. But of
course we're talking here about large international consumer companies. So
the mere fact that something is sensible won't ensure it is implimented.

Possibly deliberate if it is trying to make recordings hard to use
elsewhere. Although foul-ups shouldn't be discounted, I assume...

Thanks again for replies. When recording from TV to USB it formats the
drive in Linux which can only be played back on that TV. PC will see the
drive as empty but there is software, can't remember what it was, which let
me see the files in Windows but they were unusable. I also have a Ross
Freesat box which I believe also uses a form of Linux, it can record to USB
in an odd multipart format but I did find software which could convert these
to more standard video files.
It's very rarely I would find anything on TV worth recording and saving but
would like the ability to save and convert when I do. I had stopped using
the Freesat box when I bought this LG with Freesat built in. but I may hunt
it out again for programs I want to save.

AFAIAA, the "Dirty Bit" isn't featured in FAT volumes, only NTFS volumes.

I haven't got a magic remote control.
Can it be done without one?

I tried it on my LG 24" using the normal remote (I don't have a magic
remote either) and managed to navigate my way to the USB menu but there
was nothing about unmounting the USB. I'm not sure they need to be
unmounted from a tv, just from a computer. I removed and replaced the
USB stick several times with no ill effect.
