Does anyone know how to open the remote for the Humax 9200T (RT-531B)

I have both sliding covers off and there seems to be 2 slots at the bottom
suitable for a flat head screwdriver just wondering if I should push in and
twist or just push in, wonder who will be first with smutty comments.

Those two slots at the bottom are to hold the battery cover on. There
are two lugs on the battery cover which fit in the slots. I don't know
whether the slots have a second purpose. I've tried a flat blade
screwdriver in them, gently. There was no sign of any movement. I think
if I'd used the screwdriver more forcibly it would have damaged the
plastic.

Perhaps modern remotes are not designed to be openable.

I hope not I want to clean it and normally they just pop open, hoping
someone on here has opened the remote can give me some tips on where to open
it.

I've no idea about that one but nearly all remotes I've disassembled either
have a concealed screw/s behind a label or in the battery compartment or the
case halves just clip together. The trick is to work out where the clips
are and how to release them without damaging the case.

I think a screwdriver is too blunt and too inclined to damage the case to be
the best tool. A thin bladed kitchen knife is what I usually use. Work
your way around the edge of the case pressing the knife edge into the gap
until you find a spot that "gives" a bit more and try prying it open.

Hi, it's easy once you know the 'secret'! It's not terribly secret
though...

Take off the front button & battery covers, remove batteries, then use
an old credit card / phone top up card and slide down the gap between
the two sides. I'll happily do a video of this later on if you like.
It's not hard, the remote opens easily, all the parts come apart
easily for cleaning, and it goes back together easily too.

I shall get on to it then, but it'll appear after me tea, more than
likely.

OK Jim, here goes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkpaaPMIx_o

It's not the greatest video, but it's the first time I have made one,
believe it or not. If I had more time, I would have edited it to make
it look really easy, but as it is, you can see how awkward it is!

If it's not good enough, I'll do a better one tomorrow.

Bingo David got it apart took a fair bit of time but got there in the end,
thanks for the video I was going to go in with a screwdriver at the bottom
of the unit, so saved me screwing it all together, once again many thanks
for doing the vid.

I saw that technique on a video myself from trying to figure out how
to open up an iPod to change the battery. It's quite a smart way of
putting things together, so long as you know how to open it up again,
of course. I stopped using metal things to prize open plastic things
as the gouging marks are a bugger to get rid of, if at all, and that
sort of things really annoys me - ruined finish and all.

It's amazing just how many things are in dire need of being opened now
though :-)

Thanks very much.

I had looked closely at my RM-F01 with dodgy buttons and seen that the
two parts of it appeared to be very close-fitting with no obvious place
to separate them. I decided to buy a replacement. (I didn't want to be
in the position of damaging it and then having no remote for a few
days.) I'll now attempt to open the dodgy one, clean it and keep it as
a spare.

Shake out all dust. If the rubber membrane is very dirty, wash gently
with weak solution of washing up liquid and warm water. Do not scrub or
you'll wear off the conductive stuff on the buttons that makes the
contacts.

Remove PCB and wash the two halves of the case.

Wipe the PCB on the button contact side gently with a kitchen tissue
wetted with isopropanol.

Make sure everything is thoroughly dry and reassemble.

Don't give up if the conductive stuff gets worn off though. Cut up
small bits of aluminium kitchen foil and stick them on the rubber pads.
Restores the buttons that get the most use...

Wouldn't it be easier to get a 'universal' remote and program that to work
your Humax (before the original one goes tits-up), and other things as well
?

You could remedy some of the button layout problems of the original at the
same time.

(Keep all the original remotes in a drawer).

Yep, done that too :)

Some of these remotes use a different way to make the connection. Underneath
the buttons is a kind of ribbed surface with striped contacts and the button
inside is made of conductive foam as we used to see chips come in. This
tends to go all bitty after a time, but with some care it can be pulled lot
and replaced.
Why DO we bother!
