Having struggled to get Freeview up and running (I live in a valley shielded
from Emerley Moor) only been using a relay station for analogue TV.

I put up a high gain TV aerial and after 9 attempts got a reasonable signal
from somewhere, aerial is pointing NW form Huddersfield, looking at charts,
there are no (digital) transmitters for 100 miles in that direction.

I can only presume I'm receiving a good reflection from Emerely Moor (9
miles away) using the aerial on analogue TV, the picture is appalling.

Is there any ''test' engineering page etc., on Freeview channels that will
tell me which transmitter I'm actually using please?

Idle and Keithley are not a 100miles from Huddersfield.

The only likely sources for you are Emley Moor, Bilsdale (Near
Helmsley), Belmont (near Lincoln), or Waltham (near Leicester).

Emley Moor carries BBC 1 Yorkshire region and ITV Yorkshire

Bilsdale carries BBC 1 North East and Cumbria and ITV Tyne Tees

Belmont carries BBC 1 Lincs and E Yorks (but only weekday evenings I
think, all other times it's as Emley ?)

Waltham carries BBC 1 and ITV Central East Midlands

From that info you should be able to work out what's what between 6
and 7 weekday evenings.

Of course you might be getting some channels from one transmitter, and
some from another :-)

If your STB supports it check the frequencies it is tuned to and compare
with the info at e.g. Wolfbane.

The repeaters tell lies, giving the name of the Main transmitter.
I regularly get Lancaster which says it is Winter Hill

Look at Wolfbane http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe? and get a
compass.

No, as Dave says in this thread, that's not necessarily the name of
the transmitter. It's the name of the DTT SIPSI that the signals
originate from.

That's why people in Wales see 'Wenvoe' as the name of their
transmitter, despite in some cases it being way out of range.

Depending <exactly> where you live you could just possibly be getting
Winter Hill. Some places in east Leeds (Garforth) can get it quite
well so why shouldn't you?.

Otherwise assume you are getting a signal off the back of the aerial,
which would most likely be Belmont. If it is you will get Claire
Frisby and Peter Levey doing Look North.

Sorry about that. I did read this earlier, but forgot. In my case
the signal does come from the main transmitter so the information is
correct.

It is quite possible that you are receiving a picture through the 'back'
of the aerial so check if there is a transmittor 180 degrees from
where your aerial is pointing. This may well be what you deem
to be a 'reflection'.
Here are some transmittor channel numbers, see if they match
the channels on your set- top box. First one is Emley Moor
(spelt correctly!!).

Excellent, thank you gentlemen

Very interesting, I have to see if my Freeview box (Sony) supports
identification of transmitters.

Thank you to all those here that took the trouble to answer my questions.
