Humax PVR-9200T - upgrading loader version

I see there is a download only upgrade for the loader version for this
box. The instructions say to use an RS232 null modem cable. They
tell you not to use an adapter. However, my computer does not have a
serial port in common I believe with many other modern computers. Has
anyone tried using a USB to serial converter and did it work okay?

Does this upgrade make much practical difference?

It has been done (and discussed on
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=119 ) though I don't
know whether there are any problems getting it to work.

> Does this upgrade make much practical difference?

I assume you have loader version 4.07 (which says STING on the front panel
while it is loading) and want to upgrade to 4.09 (which says DUOVISIO).

There isn't really much difference: it loads slightly quicker and you don't
lose the RF pass-through while it is loading - which used to mean that if
you were watching TV using its own tuner you would lose reception for a few
seconds if the Humax boots up to record something &c. You still lose the
sound from SCART pass-through with the new loader - rather annoying if you
are watching a videotape.

I successfully upgraded 9200T software, including the loader, using a
USB to serial converter device available from Maplins for about £10.

I did, however, have to faff around trying to find the correct serial
port, IIRC is was COM7 or something.

Thanks. My computer shop talked me out of the converter and persuaded
me to add a serial port to the computer, which I have now done
apparently successfully.

However, I tried downloading the Humax installer. I unzipped it as
suggested but when I try to install I get a message saying that the
virtual device format in the registry is invalid. This is when I try
to install WDN4OAK.

Another problem is that the instructions are for the software update,
which I do not need, and there seem to be no instructions for
installing the loader update. Maybe they are the same?

I have e-mailed Humax and they have not bothered to reply. I can't
say I am too impressed with them. Next time round I will look at the
rest of the market.

Any help with the immediate problem appreciated.

Sorry to reply to my own post but does the box need to be connected
(though not powered on) before the installation stage?

Also the 'Formula for NEO' link does not work.

I am totally confused and thinking about giving up.

They are the same. Just select the appropriate HDF file.

Their products are good; their email responses not so good.

I don't suppose it matters, so long as it is connected before you run
WDN4OAK.

> Also the 'Formula for NEO' link does not work.

I found that WDN4OAK worked OK (for both software and loader).

> I am totally confused and thinking about giving up.

Well try running WDN4OAK at least; maybe try reinstalling it.

As I suggested in my earlier reply, if you have up-to-date software (PGXTF
1.00.21) I don't suppose that the loader version matters too much.

If you search for that error message, you'll find
plenty of suggestions. Make sure to use regedt32.exe
when changing the registry value.

Yes I have tried but I received an error
'SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers..VDD. Virtual
device driver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to
terminate the application. So it was impossible to continue. (I see
the next poster has suggested editing the registry and I will look at
this.)

When I have tried I receive text apparently in Chinese or Korean.

It won't run and it is not yet installed !!!

You might be right. I have Vista, which may be complicating things.

When I was a boy, I was told never to touch the Registry !!!

However, I decided to take a look. I Googled and found some
instructions. I am using Vista. regedt32 seems to direct you to the
registry editor and I cannot find any option to click REG_MULTI_SZ
there. Have you accomplished this in Vista? The VDD key is currently
set to 'default'.

The problem is the suggestions seem to be pre Vista. It also seems
that regedt32 and regedit are one and the same from XP onwards. It
remains less than clear how to edit the registry value. It is
possbile to add a new value but not to delete the default that is
there already.

It should be OK if you back up the Registry and/or set a System Restore
point first so you can go back.

REG_MULTI_SZ is the Type (see the headings); you can't change this. If you
click on the name you can change its value. If you right click on it you can
choose delete.

I've no idea whether this is a good idea in your case as I don't know where
you got the information.

The information came from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314452

I tried to delete the default key (?) but it is not possible to delete
this. If you create a new key it can be set up as REG_MULTI_SZ but
this does not solve the problem.

On my system, under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\
I have two entries:

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
VDD REG_MULTI_SZ

The VDD has no value (blank)

Do you have this?

I think it's the VDD one which you have to delete and then add back again.

If that's what you've done, have you checked the Command.com file as
suggested (though they only give the details of the XP version)?

Er - the instructions you link say nothing about the default key.

If you've added a VDD key (so it's the same as my registry) and it still
doesn't work the problem must lie elsewhere.

The second is called [AB] VDD REG_MULTI_SZ

I assume that is what would happen if you do the following (from your linked
page):

4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Multi-string Value.
5. Type VDD in the Value Name box, and then press ENTER.

As I understand the instructions, you don't touch the
default. You add the new key named "VDD", but leave
the value blank.
