Recently I saw a 32" Sony Bravia that had a facility for labelling the
various input selections on the 'Inputs' menu (e.g. HDMI-1="SAT",
HDMI-2="DVD"), but on the 37" Bravia I can't find any such facility.
Anyone know if it can be found and where, please?

Try the "i-manual" key on the remote, and then, "Fun features with
connected equipment"

I'm just guessing.

No joy there, I'm afraid. :-(

I've been trying hard with intuition, but still can't find it.

Perhaps your 37" model is different from mine?

Otherwise, may I ask if your son can remember how he managed it,
please?!

Well, my 40EX724's i-manual says:-

Home > Settings > External Inputs > AV Preset > Edit Labels

on my sony, bring up home, go all the way to the left to the settings
column, , go down to external inputs, click on it, then click on av preset.
you can then click on a hdmi input and give it a name.

That was the sort of clue I'd failed to find!

Many thanks - all sorted out now.

Thank you. I had seen "AV Preset" but it didn't sound relevant...

All sorted out now!

I mended a kettle using a soldering iron today (more about this later).
Having finished I left the kettle on the bench and took the soldering
iron to the kitchen and tried to use it to boil water.

That's a good idea. You could boil just one cup and save energy.

At first I settled for the builtin "SAT" label for the Humax HDMI input,
but then gave the "Edit:" option a try, which is when an Edit screen
& keyboard came up.

Used that to change the label to "Humax-FrSat", but then found the
menu reverted to "SAT" when I hit Enter and Confirm, back in the inputs
table.

Then - by trial and error - I found that if I first scrolled right and
changed the input icon before hitting Confirm, the new label did get
saved!

As someone said, not exactly intuitive (nor is the Edit function
mentioned in the iManual).

That seems to be descriptive of all Sony kit, menus that are totally
counter intuitive and incomprehensible. It's their software equivalent to
the memory stick, another unnecessary standard that's proprietary to Sony
for the sake of being incompatible with perfectly good alternative
existing standards in the vain hope that they become a de-facto standard.

You must have, but it's disguised as something else, I can't remember,
and I'm 1500 miles away from my Bravia right now.

My one shuts down after 4 hours, and I'm sure I choose that figure in a
menu. Take a look at the on screen 'i manual' I'm sure it's under
'Idle TV Standby' or 'Presence Sensor Standby'

It's not mentioned at all in the pdf, or paper manual.

That's a hell of a scenic route just to get to Colchester.
