Having done a fresh Store Channels to reveal all the sparkling (!) new free
channels, I don't see the previously promised Turner Classic Movies.
Annoying, considering that this was probably the only one I was interested
in seeing. What happened to it?

Haven't heard much for a while (or if anyone else has news links, can you post
them?). It's been a while now, but Turner and Crown Castle couldn't settle
contract terms. Channels 22, 32 and 44 are still reserved for the
CNN/Boomerang/TCM combo, but as the 30th draws closer Turner still haven't
signed on the dotted line. It's gone from a "probably" to a "maybe" to a
"probably not", so don't hold your breath.

Why ? We're already getting three news channels (four if you count sky
sports news) I for one can do without another !

As others have posted - Turner haven't signed up with Crown Castle yet - but
there are channels allocated for a single, shared, TCM/CNN/Boomerang
service.

I believe that the initial "Freeview is doomed" feelings have been replaced
by "Freeview is the new analogue and we'd better grab a slot on it if we
can" feelings by some broadcasters. As a result it is rumoured that Crown
Castle are requesting a minimum 6 year sign-up, and charging around £3m /
year for carriage on the platform. (The reverse to ITV Digital who paid
channels subscription revenue in return for being allowed to carry their
channels!)

I guess Turner may be hesitant at committing such a large sum over such a
long period when the popularity of the platform is still unknown.

On the other hand if analogue IS switched off in 2010 - then all the
Freeview channels will effectively be on a par with BBC One, Two, ITV1 and
C4 in carriage terms - appearing as default channels on any terrestrial kit.

As far as I've read elsewhere and on the newsgroups, TCM, CNN and Boomerang
are allocated slots - although the licences still need to be agreed. These
are the channel spaces like Ch 22 etc...

Wait until the 30th October and you will find out.
