Why is it that even when full up, most boxes and tvs with AD seem to be
struggling to get heard over the normal sound? OK the sound ducks, but not
enough most of the time.

I thought that the AD is on a separate sound channel so you can adjust the
relative volumes.

It would be easier to design it so that there is a separate AD+normal sound
channel as well as the normal sound channel, then it would work on more
boxes and they could reduce the normal sound when the AD came on.

Or maybe boxes could have something akin to AGC that reduces the normal
sound when the AD comes on.

I'm not sure how the ducking is triggered, but sometimes it stays down for
too long or oscillates wildly for no apparent reason. I agree many would
like a way to pull off the AD track on its own for families where the AD
can get to be a pain in the neck for the rest of the sighted folk. I seem to
Recall Panasonic allow this. However most do not and do have a separately
selected volume but its full up most of the time and the bad design means
that the main volume also lowers the AD volume as well, so in efect one is a
master, the other like an input on a mixer, but there is no way to reduce
the normal sound while leeaving AD higher.

Of course there is still the issue of the data stream getting out of synch
on some channels in some circumstances due to the slow processing in the box
or its software.
