How to Access Viera Link on Panasonic TV?

I have just bought a Panasonic Viera TX32LZD80 which I
want to connect to my external powered speakers. I need to
be able to control the volume using the TV remote.

The manual doesn't explain how but I understand from other
posts that I need to go to the VieraLink menu and set the
'speaker' to external. However when I press the VieraLink
button or try to access the setting through the menu I get
the message 'Feature not Available'.

Anybody any idea why I might get this message?

Isn't viera link a special feature for connecting various panasonic
devices together? e.g. hook up a Panasonic DVD player to the TV and
you can control the DVD player directly through the TV even if its
hidden away in a cupboard somewhere. Hooking up with speakers would
just be using straight RCA cables into your amp, and I think its
likely that that the volume from that output would be constant (fairly
sure that that is the case on my Panasonic 32LMD70).

Matt,
you are exactly right. You can just use the audio out
from the RCA sockets but the volume is constant. The
manual does not explain how, but previous posts have
recommended that if the VieraLink settings are changed
to switch off the internal speakers then the remote
volume controls the RCA out.

My problem is that VieraLink is inaccessible on my
machine, I get the message 'Function not Avail' - this
is what I don't understand.

But is the amp a panasonic amp? And are you connecting it up with
anything other than just a pair of red and white RCA cables? If you
are doing that, then viera link isn't available.

According to http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/1404987/index.html
Viera Link works by using data signals over an HDMI cable. So unless
you are using an HDMI cable to connect your amp and your TV then Viera
Link will be unavailable.

Does that help?

I had cause to talk to RNIB about this a while back and they were
explaining the nice folk at Panasonic made sure all their stuff could be
controlled from the one easy to use remote and also the only other think
you could control was the level of the output of the audio description, so
extrapolating it I would expect the line levels are just that, fixed line
levels.

Viera link is for connecting compatible Panasonic AV devices together via
HDMI. See http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/571041/index.html
I imagine that if you has a Panasonic HDMI equipped AV amplifier, then the
volume control would control the audio, bearing in mind that we are talking
about HDMI audio with digital control signals. As Brian and Matt say in
their posts, line level audio is just that.

Ian.

Thanks guys for pointing out my misunderstanding.

So it seems that the VieraLink operates only over HDMI
and since I don't have anything plugged into the HDMI
hence the error message 'feature not available'. So in
the menus I cannot switch from internal speakers to
external speakers.

Just to clarify things; I have the audio-out via RCA
sockets going straight to powered speakers - not to an
amplifier and hence I don't have a remote for the
speakers and hence I want to control the volume from the
powered speakers via the TV remote. Can it be done?

Simply, no (as RCA outputs). You could use the headphone socket
instead, which will increase / decrease with the volume?

I would question why you are using power speakers at all if you're
after an improvement. "Decent" powered speakers would probably come
with their own remote control, or better still a separate amp and
passive speakers.

hdtvorg.co.uk reports the sound quality of the TV as "the TX-32LZD80
delivers a more powerful performance in this respect than most. Still
slightly underpowered in our opinion but not to the degree where
viewing pleasure is compromised." (http://www.hdtvorg.co.uk/reviews/

Well Matt, the headphone socket is a possibility because
the headphone level is controlled separately to the
internal loudspeakers, albeit via the menu screen so not
so convenient.
Although the TX-32LZD80 has better sound quality than
most LCD sets, it is still poor compared with the large
Sony Triniton Nicam CRT TV is has replaced. I happened
to have a pair of good quality Yamaha powered speakers
spare so was aiming to use them.
thanks for your help

Um, it only works between Panasonic devices.

Viera Link is Panasonic's name for HDMI CEC. Each manufacturer has
their own name for it, probably to excuse their incomplete, unreliable,
and incompatible implementations.

Have you enabled the control on both ends? You have to enable the Panasonic
to send control signals and the other end (DVD player) to accept them.

You probably know this by 'VieraLink' is just the Panasonic name for HDMI
control and most brands have their own name for this but they are almost all
compatible. For example I do exactly what you want between my Panasonic TV
and PS3 whic I use to play DVDs and Blurays - I use the TV remote to control
the PS3 playback and it works a treat.

FYI - You can't do this on some Humax devices because they didn't expose the
HDMI controls over the HDMI interface; HDR-FOX for example - frustrating!
