Just noticed that when viewing an HD channel (BBC or ITV1), whereas the
Humax Foxsat-HDR's 'i' option shows "1080i", the TV's 'i' shows "576i".

I can't find anything in the TV's handbook on this.

Why is the TV indicating "576i"?

How do you have your TV connected up? 576i means that the TV is seeing
an SD signal (possibly from SCART - AV1 normally on Sonys).

On My SOny set the HDMI inputs are AV5 and AV6

The Bravia 'i' info shows 'HDMI1' as well as '576i' when the Humax is
showing HD 1080i.

Ah, now I've found the Humax's V-Format button, and the TV is now showing
1080i. I don't understand that how/why V-Format defaulted to '576i'
instead of '1080i'.

I've now changed V-Format to 'Original', so the *TV* will do any
scaling up of non-HD signals.

bbc1 and itv are not HD - they are 576 line interlaced broadcasts - i.e
576i.
when you use your box it says 1080i because the box is doing the upscaling -
but it's not really improving it to HD quality.

He doesn't actually say BBC1. He says 'an HD channel (BBC or ITV1).'
I assume this refers to the BBC HD channel and ITV1 HD (in England and
Wales).
