It's the same as every other channel that should be on Freeview, why we get
TMF not MTV, UK BrightIdeas & not UK Gold. We get a denatured version of the
channel, designed to make you subscribe to Sky for the proper version. Very
frustrating if you live in a flat and don't have the choice of Sky. Freeview
is designed with one thing in mind, to maintain the value of Sky's basic
package. It's planned with Sky in mind, to be worse than Sky, by people who
all have Sky at home and don't care what rubbish is on Freeview. They can't
understand why anyone with more than two pence to scratch themselves with
would be watching Freeview rather than Sky anyway. And they've forgotten
that some people live in flats and don't have the choice of Sky, no matter
how hard they push things to try and make you get it. All these channels,
like Eurosport and MTV, used to be free on Sky, and would naturally be free
on Freeview also, if Freeview could have started years earlier, or if Sky
was still a new thing. But Sky had such a lead, that they have been able to
get all these channels into a contract as part of a subscription package,
and the channels, which would otherwise be more than happy to be duplicated
on Freeview, dare not break their contracts. In some circles this is known
as "restrictive practise". I can certainly appreciate this because it
restricts my viewing.
I can't have Sky, so why should Sky be able to monopolise channels like
Eurosport and MTV? I don't see much sign of Sky being forced to allow these
channels on to Freeview, regardless of exisiting contracts, however. The
only hope is that sometime in the future every TV set will have a digital
tuner, and some channels like Eurosport will think again when they can get
more viewers on Freeview than they can on Sky, charge more for their
advertising slots, and make more money outside of Sky's basic package than
they can by staying in it.

I live in a flat. I have Sky.
I live in a large, private block in south-west London. About 10 years ago,
we asked the block managing agents if there was a possibility of getting
(analogue) Sky. A firm was sourced (SCCI), a system installed, and we've
never looked back. We now, of course, have Sky Digital and around 40% of
the block is signed up so far - not bad when you consider we have over 700
flats! We pay a normal sub to Sky - as though we lived in a house - and a
small monthly sum to SCCI for dish and system maintenance.
